We all
have to live on this earth sharing the same air, soil and water, so doesn't it
make sense to use the most earth-friendly options available to us when working
with our plants?
Organic gardening uses natural products and techniques. To be
involved in gardening with earth-friendly solutions, the gardener must be open
to constantly learning more. New research and product development is always
challenging the earth-friendly gardener to stay informed. Given that
we are now in the heart of the fall season, its appropriate to share some of
the more important important earth friendly products for the garden.
Fertilizers/Soil Amendments:
- Bone/Blood Meal- Blood meal is a good source of nitrogen. The combination
bone/blood meal fertilizers are good.
- Fish Emulsion and
Seaweed/Kelp Extracts- Good water-soluble source of nitrogen.
- Manure, Earthworm
Castings & Compost- Nutritional value and quality vary greatly in
packaged products, but all composted products improve the soil structure
as well as offering some nutrition.
Insecticides:
- Insecticidal Soap-
Very effective against soft-bodied insects.
- Horticultural Oil-
Works well on many insects including difficult problems such as scale and
spider mites.
- Bacillus
thuringiensus (Bt)- Several strains available that target chewing insects,
fungus gnats, mosquitoes and Colorado
potato beetles.
- Pyrethrin-
Broad-spectrum contact insecticide derived from plants. Various forms
(natural and synthetic) and sold in combination with other insecticides
because it makes both work better.
- Neem- Works as a
repellent, a contact and residual insecticide and interrupts the life
cycle of the insects.
Beneficial Insects:
-
Lady Bugs- Dormant adults sold for release to help with aphid control.
- Beneficial
Nematodes- Specific strains of nematodes that infest grubs and such in the
soil.
When it
comes to earth friendly gardening, there are a greater number of options every
season. By understanding and considering
the many products and their uses, we stand a better chance to gain a harvest of
blooms, edibles and beauty to enhance our lives.
Cheers to Your Garden

This is the time to show your children and grand kids how much fun and how
exciting gardening is. They may never enjoy deadheading the petunias, but planting, harvesting, learning what's a weed,
collecting insects - these are all activities that will get them in the garden!
You've heard it a thousand times, but do you do it? Start with great
soil and you'll wind up with great plants. Healthy plants get less
diseases, attract less insect pests and require less water. We suggest using Bumper Crop in your soil!
House plants start to slow down as the days get shorter. Cut back on watering and feeding until it gets a little warmer. We suggest using Fox Farm Big Bloom Liquid Plant Food once a month.
Feed azaleas, camellias, hydrangea and rhododendrons with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants. We suggest using Acid Planting Mix from Master Nursery. Formulated for all acid loving plants. Contains all organic long-lasting
ingredients to improve soil porosity and drainage. Use as a soil
amendment, in containers or as a mulch.
Continue picking your summer tomatoes and squash if you have some left.Dig or pull up any plants that have finished producing or have
succumbed to disease. Remember to add only the plants that are not
diseased to your compost pile.
If your tomatoes and other spring plants are done you can start putting in arugula, chard, kale, lettuce, and beats!
Add fall color to your garden with Chrysanthemums. Also known as mums and it is the Salinas City Flower. These GREAT flowers come in a wide variety of colors, including white, off-white, yellow, gold, bronze, red, burgundy, pink, lavender and purple.
October is fall planting season which is the ideal time to get many plants into the ground. McShane's is well stocked now with trees, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers.
Ask a McShane's staff member for more great tips for keeping your garden looking great!
