Mulching in the garden is a MUST and September is the perfect time for you to do it in your garden. Mulch provides several benefits to the garden; for exsample
weed control, water retention and a great finished look to your garden. The
mulch of choice for me is Gorilla Hair. Gorilla Hair is a shredded
redwood material that is a long-lasting, decorative ground cover. It
almost looks fuzzy and therefore is soft in appearance and rich in
color. Best of all McShane's has the lowest price for gorilla hair. We are having sale and it is only $34.99 a yard.
By
covering all of the bare soil in a garden with Gorilla Hair, most weeds will never
be able to come into contact with the soil. I also love Black Forest
Compost and Cocoa Mulch. Not
only does mulch help with weeds, but it also maintains a consistent
level of moisture in the soil. This is important because a plant that
has a constant level of adequate moisture is less likely to become
stressed, which means that it will be better able to resist insects and
diseases and, keep your plants looking the best. Finally,
mulches will break down over time, adding nutrients and organic matter
to the soil. The worms and microbes in the soil will break down organic
mulch, which will result in great healthy soil. Good soil will produce amazing plants. We all want a beautiful, weed-free garden. Come on over to McShane's Nursery and Landscape Supply and we will help you pick out the
right mulch for you. To learn more watch this video about ground cover by clicking hereCheers to Your Garden

This September brings a late summer. Zucchini and tomatoes are still coming! Continue picking your summer tomatoes and squash.
Dig or pull up any plants that have finished producing or have
succumbed to disease. Remember to add only the plants that are not
diseased to your compost pile.
Cool-season greens like arugula, chard, kale, lettuce, and mustard are some of the easiest vegetables to grow from seed and have much better flavor than store-bought types. We recommend you plant your seeds in Light Warrior by Fox Farms.
Add fall color to your garden with Chrysanthemums. Also known as mums and it is the Salinas City Flower,, come in a wide variety of colors, including white, off-white, yellow, gold, bronze, red, burgundy, pink, lavender and purple.
September marks the beginning of fall planting season which is the ideal time to get many plants into the ground. McShane's is well stocked now with trees, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers.
Don't have a compost pile? We suggest first time composters to purchase the Worm Café! The Worm Cafe composting bin enables you to reduce, reuse, and recycle by using worms to compost your every day kitchen scraps into fertile compost for use in your lawn or garden.
Before planting a new lawn or flower or vegetable beds, prepare the soil. Put a good soil conditioner down. We love Happy Frog Soil Conditioner. This great soil conditioner is made by hand, in small batches, checking for quality every step of the way. In every bag, you'll find finely screened, pH-balanced forest humus, earthworm castings, and bat guano, not to mention beneficial microbes that stimulate root development and help plants access nutrients in the soil.
