The Central Coast of California is blessed with one of the best climates on earth.  We have  become world-renown for our gardens.  In just a small region, we have some of the greatest opportunities to grow everything from guavas and pistachios to protea and tuberose. Watch this video for some information on roses. Click HERE

One of the most successful of all plants for our region is the rose.  It also happens to be one of the most beautiful and popular.  Thanks to our mild climate and incredible soils, roses thrive along the Central Coast.

The first key to AMAZING roses is the selecting the right location to grow your rose.  Roses like minimum 4 to 6 hours of sunlight each day.  They prefer rich, loamy soil and moderate drainage.

I always recommend a "Starter Fertilizer" that can be cultivated into the soil within which you are planting. One of my new favorite fertilizers is American Pride by FoxFarm.

Once your roses are planted, the next critical step toward success is on-going maintenance.  You will need to fertilize your roses on a regular basis to ensure good health.

Roses are America's favorite flower.  Even better, gardening is America's most popular hobby.  Roses can be a key part to your garden and landscaping and boast the reward of incredible beauty.

Cheers to your Rose Garden

  • Harvest vegetables continuously to stretch their season. To stretch the season you should also fertilize regularly,  and we recommend using Dr. Earth Tomato, Vegetable and Herb Fertilizer
  • Prune summer-blooming shrubs after flowers finish.  McShane's carry a GREAT pruning sheers that are only $24.99
  • Watch out for aphids on your plants. They multiply fast at this time of year, and destroy plants by sucking out the sap, leaving the plant dry and wilting. We recomend using a organic spray called Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew.  Want to learn more about this great insecticide?  Watch this video of Steve talking about it. Just like here
  • Root systems allow plants to access water and valuable nutrients and gives them the ability to withstand longer periods without water. We recommend using  Mycorrhizae. Mycorrhizae lives on the roots of plants and form a symbiotic relationship.  They extend microscopic straw-like filaments called "hyphae" into the soil where they extract, transport, and dramatically increase a host plant's supply of nutrients and moisture. Pockets of nutrients and water in the soil which were once unreachable by standard root systems are now made accessible through the "super-mining" effects which mycorrhiza gifts to your plants.
