Winter is the perfect time to plan your garden
When putting together a plan for their outdoor spaces, folks who want the best results will typically use a landscape designer. In many cases folks hire a designer to serve as a consultant as an in between. Without q uestion, hiring a professional for direction is the way to go.
A landscape design includes "handscape plan"and "planting plan" component. Ultimately, the plans will specify the materials that the installing contractor will need to use. Would like to read more about choosing a landscape design? Just click here and read a great article on landscape design. February, although the shortest month, can seem unbearably long to gardeners who can't wait to get their hands dirty again. While there are few outdoor gardening activities to do this month, indoors, gardeners can keep busy caring for houseplants, planning the garden, and dreaming about the arrival of spring!
*Outdoors, periodically take a walk around your yard to check protective mulches around trees and flower beds. Check out a great flyer about what to do during the winter in your garden just by clicking here
*Check stored bulbs, tubers and corms. Discard any that are soft or diseased. You can buy new ones, that will be healthy and ready to go!
*Late winter is the time to prune your fruit trees and roses. Look over your plants now and remove dead, dying, or diseased of the tree or rose. Need more help with pruning fruit trees? Just click here and read a great article about pruning your fruit trees! Steve McShane and edible gardening specialist Christa Jennings use Growtech pruners. We sold out for a while but we just received a new shipment!
*This year plan to grow at least one new vegetable that you've never grown before; it may be better than what you are already growing.
* Fertilize fruit trees before spring so you have an optimum spring
*Check all five growing factors if your house plants are not growing well. Light, temperature, nutrients, moisture, and humidity must be favorable to provide good growth. To learn more about indoor plants read this great article by just clicking here.
* Check out the new roses and fruit trees we have. Everything is ready to plant and going to look great for spring!

City Councilman Emilio Martinez from Watsonville sent us this GREAT recipe for guacamole. We loved it when we tried it but the best news is avocados are abundant in healthy raw fat, fiber, vitamin K, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin C!
This great dip does not have any extra sour cream or anything, ju st pure vegetables and fruits that you can grow in your own garden!
Chunky Guacamole Recipe
Serves
4-6
Ingredients: 3 large ripe avocados 1 small red onion, finely chopped 2 small tomatoes, finely diced Juice of 1 lemon or lime Handful of chopped fresh cilantro leaves Sea salt, to taste Jalapenos, to taste
Directions:
Scoop flesh of ripe avocados into a large bowl. Add all other ingredients and mash lightly with a fork. Mash just enough to evenly distribute ingredients and break down avocado into chunky portions. If you want good texture, don't mash too much; mash just enough to evenly distribute the ingredients and break down the avocados into chunky portions. Grab some chips and enjoy! |

Congratulations to Ann Ruiz!! She got the answer right of "ginger" to last weeks question which was:
"What has been clinically demonstrated to work twice as well as Dramamine for fighting motion sickness, with no side effects?"
This weeks question is: During the War between the States, doctors in the Union army routinely used this kind of juice to clean gunshot wounds, and General Grant, deprived of it, sent a testy memo to the War Department : "I will not move my troops without ______!"
Have fun and good luck!
The rules of the game are simple.
We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter. The winner will be announced in McShane's next online newsletter.Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person with in 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.
