New Scouts Have Their First Day At Camp
All new Cub Scouts are invited to attend their first Scouting event -- Cub Scouting Day One -- on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Cub World at Beaumont Scout Reservation. Cost is $7 per Cub Scout; parents and siblings are free.
More than a dozen outdoor activities await new Cub Scouts. Families may bring a picnic lunch. Vendors will be available with concessions. The "gift shop," a.k.a. Trading Post, will be open.

Popcorn Show 'N' Sell Orders Due Tuesday

Orders for the Show 'N' Sell popcorn sale are due on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Units order popcorn products from the council and can be sold in public venues or door-to-door. Scouts receive payment; customers receive popcorn immediately. Product arrives on Sept. 20.

All Scouts in our council are welcome to earn their way to camp by selling Trail's End Popcorn. Registered members received a brochure in the mail with details on the sale and prizes. Read more at popcorn.stlbsa.org.

The Duffle Blog: Order of the Arrow, Service

The council's Order of the Arrow (O.A.) Lodges teach Scouts about selfless service and contribute thousands of hours in service to our camps and programs. At right, a Scout looks at tons of rock that O.A. members placed on the sides of the low-water bridge near Swift Base at the S bar F Scout Ranch.

Leader Tip

Spud Game

Equipment: Any type of soft ball that won't hurt when it hits someone

Every Scout is assigned a number from 1 to the number of players who are participating. Players form a close circle with one Scout in the center who has the ball.

The Scout throws the ball straight up as high as he can and yells out a number. Everyone scatters except the Scout whose number was called. He catches or picks up the ball. As soon as he has the ball, he yells "SPUD" and everyone must freeze.

The Scout with the ball can then take up to three giant steps towards any Scout he wants. He then throws the ball at the Scout. The target Scout can move all parts of his body to dodge the throw -- except his feet. If the Scout is hit, he gets "S" otherwise the thrower gets "S."

Everyone gets back in a circle and the Scout who received a letter gets to throw the ball up for the next round. When a Scout reaches S-P-U-D, he is out of the game. Or, after a set time, the person with the least letters is the winner.
