Imagine you're a Boy Scout or Venturer and you've just been offered a chance to go mountain biking, whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, rappelling and kayaking.

Your probable response: Where do I sign up?

All of those activities and more will be part of the 2013 National Jamboree.

When: July 15 -24, 2013
Where: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scouting Reserve, Beckley, West Virginia

The council will be sending a large contingent. The group will tour Washington, D.C., and Virginia before the Jamboree. Read more...

P.S.: Our Scouts collected more than 1.8 million canned goods during November's Scouting for Food. Here's a time-lapsed video from the St. Louis Area Foodbank that shows the warehouse filling up during last year's collection.

You are welcome to join our conversation on The Duffle Blog about how we can improve the Scouting for Food drive as we enter our 28th campaign.

A new series of meeting plans centered around Cub Scouting's 12 core values is available. The materials are based around various themes to enhance the pack meeting.

The plans--containing several pages of program suggestions, stories, puzzles, and more--are compiled into a downloadable PDF file. They are being rolled out between now and next May. The first three, centered around the values of cooperation, responsibility, and citizenship, are already online.

New Eagle Scout Service Project Book

Eagle Scout BadgeEagle Scout rank requirement 5 has been reworded. To support that change, a new Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook has been created. Through Dec. 31, 2011, Scouts have a choice to use either the new workbook or the one it is replacing. Scouts whose Eagle Scout service project has already been approved by the council or district under the former wording of requirement 5--and using the former workbook--should continue with the same workbook. If their project has not yet been approved by the council or district, they may elect to use the revised requirement 5 and the new workbook.

Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Eagle Scout candidates--unless they have already submitted a plan for approval by the council or district under the former requirement--will be expected to fulfill the revised service project requirement 5 using the new workbook.

Leader Tip:

Carrying Goodwill Relay
Equipment: Three gift-wrapped boxes, similar in size, per team.
Divide participants into teams. Pair up the players within each team and station them about 10 feet apart. On signal the first pair carries the three boxes with two hands--but each boy can only use one hand. The object is to carry the gifts to the next pair without dropping them. If they drop the gifts, they must stop and pick them up before going on.

Parent Tip

Should parents withhold meetings to punish Scouts?

It's a really tricky one: Should you discourage this form of punishment - and keep Scouts coming to meetings? Or would that risk offending the parents by telling them how to raise their child? Read more...

Note: Washington University is looking for typically developing 12- to 20-year-old males to participate in an Autism research study as the control group. This non-invasive study consists mainly of participants playing computer games as their brain activity is monitored. Their brain waves during the games will then be compared to the brain activity of boys with Autism playing the same games. Boys who participate can receive $25 per hour and parents can receive $25 for filling out survey information. Contact Teddi Gray at (314) 286-0068 for more information.
