2011 Scouting for Food LogoThe 27th annual Scouting for Food Good Turn begins on Saturday, Nov. 12. Scouts will distribute more than one million bags and return the following Saturday, Nov. 19, to collect the bags filled with donated canned goods.

Here are some important items for all Scouts and leaders:
  • All Scouts and Scouters should be in full uniform.
  • Select an assembly place and time for Nov. 12, such as the unit's regular meeting place or another convenient central location. Be sure everyone is aware of the time and location.
  • Give brief instructions on distributing bags to all adults and Scouts.
  • All Scouts should travel in groups of two or more (the buddy system).
  • Scouting for Food CollectionHave enough vehicles to support the number of Scouts and the area covered.
  • Scouts should leave the bags on doors. Do not enter the home and do not put bags in mailboxes.
  • Bags should be distributed to residences only--no businesses.
  • Vehicles should stay as close to Scouts as possible.
  • Adults should closely supervise Scouts by walking alongside them.

Nov. 22 Is Deadline For Entering Cub Scout
Summer Camp Lottery For 2012
Cub at campfireMake sure your Cub Scouts have an opportunity for fun and adventure at one of our summer camp programs. Enter the summer camp lottery for Mom & Me, Dad & Lad, Webelos Mini-Camp and Webelos Camp. Demand for our camping programs is high, so a lottery system gives packs an equal chance for access. Lottery and camp information was sent to Cubmasters in early October. Reservations fees for Webelos Mini-Camp and Webelos Camp are $25 per Scout. The lottery will be held in early December and confirmations will be returned to the unit leader by Dec. 31.

Start A Religious Emblems Program
God and Me AwardEach year, thousands of parents and adult volunteer leaders help Scouts earn the religious emblem of their faith. However, many unit leaders often don't have enough information to adequately answer questions about the religious emblem programs of all faiths.

The organization Programs of Religious Activities with Youth, or P.R.A.Y., has information on the religious emblems of almost every faith. The PRAY website, http://www.praypub.org, has a complete listing of the awards, workbooks, emblems and other material. Here are links to other resources in our council:

Leader Tip:

Unwrap
Equipment: Mittens or thick gloves, bags, wrapped sticks of gum.

Form den teams. Give each team a pair of mittens or heavy gloves and a bag containing one wrapped stick of gum for each player. On signal, the first player puts on the gloves, takes a stick of gum from the bag, unwraps it, and puts the gum into his mouth. He puts the wrapper into the bag and gives the mittens or gloves to the next player, who repeats the action. Continue until all have begun chewing. For dens of different sizes, some boys may need to go twice. The first team finished wins.

Parent Tip

Honestly, Now

If parents stretch the truth or commit "harmless" acts of dishonesty, their children are likely to do the same. Here are ways--besides setting a good example--to encourage children not to lie or otherwise be dishonest.

Quick Clicks
Invitations: Scouts are invited to visit attractions or take part in various programs throughout our community. Many organizations offer Scouts free or reduced-cost programs.
Opportunities to Serve: Nonprofit and charitable organizations welcome collaboration on service projects with units. Note: Washington University is looking for typically developing 12- to 20-year-old males to participate in an Autism research study as the control group. This non-invasive study consists mainly of participants playing computer games as their brain activity is monitored. Their brain waves during the games will then be compared to the brain activity of boys with Autism playing the same games. Boys who participate can receive $25 per hour and parents can receive $25 for filling out survey information. Contact Teddi Gray at (314) 286-0068 for more information.
