Scouting for Food:
Prepare now for the largest single-day canned food drive in our community. Scouting for Food teaches the values of citizenship and service to our youth members and helps thousands of families in our region.

Scouting for Food
Scouts collected more than 2 million canned goods during last year's drive.
Scouts will distribute bags on Saturday, Nov. 12, and return the following Saturday, Nov. 19, to collect the bags filled with canned goods. Remember these important steps:
  • Recruit enough adults to help. Youths need supervision, especially when on busy city streets and rural highways. Good supervision and discipline prevent many injuries.
  • Pick up your unit's bags. Most were distributed to units at district Roundtable meetings during the first week of October.
  • Contact your district's Scouting for Food participation chairman if you need bags.
  • Review your unit's assigned territory. Each unit should have an assigned area. Please cover only your unit's assigned territory.

Each year, our Scouts, parents and leaders collect enough food to assist approximately 500 pantries throughout our region with a four-month supply of food.

A Look Back At Taste of Scouting
More than a thousand new Cub Scouts, their parents and siblings enjoyed Taste of Scouting on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Beaumont Scout Reservation. Visit our Flickr site for photographs from the event.

Popcorn Sale In Full Swing
Thousands of Scouts from throughout our council are taking orders for the council's popcorn sale. Make sure your Scouts have enough order forms and envelopes. Pick up order forms and envelopes at any council service center. Download additional popcorn items and information from the popcorn forms page.

Note: Make sure your Scouts can explain why they cannot accept donations. First, the drive is a product sale and soliciting money in lieu of purchasing a product is a violation of our agreement to promote donations to the United Way in October. Second, youth members may not solicit money for their chartered organizations, the local council, or in support of other organizations. Read more on fundraising policies...

Training Helps Leaders Provide Safe, Fun Programs At All Levels Of Scouting
Trained StripNew or experienced leaders and parents can enhance their ability to provide a high-quality Scouting program by attending various training programs. Basic Adult Leader Training and supplemental training is available online. Youth Protection Training, Fast Start, Safety Afloat, Safe Swim Defense  and Troop Committee Challenge can be taken through the Online Learning Center (olc.scouting.org).

Training For New Leaders: Get information on the courses leaders should complete to be fully trained.

Leader Outdoor Experience: During this overnight event, Cub Scout leaders can learn how to successfully lead an outdoor program that's fun, safe and exciting. The first course is Oct. 15-16 at Beaumont Scout Reservation and the second is Oct. 22-23 at Pine Ridge Scout Camp.

Leader Tip:

Bagel Bird Feeder
Materials: Bagel (a stale, firm bagel works well), peanut butter, lard or shortening, rolled oats, birdseed, string or twine.

Mix peanut butter well with equal parts lard or shortening. Spread peanut butter-lard mixture all over the outside of a bagel. Roll the bagel in a mixture of one part oats and one part birdseed. Tie a string to the bagel. Tie the string to a tree branch or wherever you please. The birds can eat all but the string so there is no mess to clean up.
