Greetings!

If you've enjoyed and benefited from your son or daughter's Scouting experience, make it your legacy to leave your unit bigger and stronger than when you first started volunteering.

The start of the school year signals an annual rebirth for Scout units.  Recruiting new Scouts brings new adult volunteer leaders, parent helpers and enthusiastic children who can't wait to go camping or shoot a bow and arrow.

Each year, thousands of first graders eagerly await the chance to join Cub Scouts and become a Tiger Cub.  But other grade levels are just as important.  Parents of second

and third graders often delay joining until their son is settled in school.  We've witnessed fourth and fifth graders joining because they're no longer involved in sports or other activities and see their friends enjoying outdoor adventures.

Several new or revised resources are available for 2010 School Night to Join Scouting campaign:

Beascout.org: This website allows prospective members to enter their address, zip code and view a map with Scout units in their geographic area. Units can customize information on this map! Learn more by downloading the Be A Scout Unit Guide (3MG PowerPoint).

School Night PowerPoint (3MG):
With a projector, screen, laptop and this presentation, you're ready to provide a high-quality orientation for your new parents and leaders.

Parent's Orientation Guide (PDF):
Each unit will receive a quantity of these booklets to help new parents become familiar with your unit and the Scouting program.

As always, our staff is ready to assist and support you with recruiting. Thank you for helping our youth members grow and learn countless ways.

Ready For Your Popcorn Dinner?
Popcorn ImageWell, we really don't serve a dinner of just popcorn.

If your unit is planning to participate in this year's Trail's End Popcorn sale, we'll buy dinner for two leaders and train them on conducting a successful unit fundraiser. The first of seven training/dinner sessions start next week. (No meal served on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Beaumont Scout Reservation.)

A 2009 survey of unit leaders in our council who sold Trail's End Popcorn found that 95 percent were planning to sell again in 2010. Many sale and product improvements are being implemented for this year's sale.
Learn why this fundraiser helps your unit and our council provide a stronger Scouting program. Read more...
Program Planning
Is Key To Fun, Learning

Program Preview Guide-2010-11A Scout's dream of fun and adventure won't come true without unit leaders planning those activities. Taking time to develop a year of activities creates a vision of success and generates enthusiasm. Distribute your calendar to current and prospective parents of Scouts.
Put your unit in high gear for the program year. Gather your key leaders and plan your activities. Download the Council's 2010-2011 Program Guide (PDF) for calendars, program and facility information.
New Youth Protection Training Requirements For Registered Leaders
The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America announced the following requirements effective June 1, 2010:

  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before submitting an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

Leader Tip:

Equipment: One water balloon for each two-personteam
Form teams of two. They start out close together. After each successful toss where the balloon does not break, each player takes one step backward and tosses again. Continue until only one team remains with balloons that are intact.
