Greetings!
The Council's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America starts one week from today.
ScoutQuest 100 will be June 4-6, 2010, in Forest Park. More than 10,000 Scouts, leaders and parents are expected to camp throughout the weekend and another 10,000 are expected to attend on Saturday.
Planning for the event started more than two years ago. Hundreds of volunteers, businesses and community organizations worked together to provide a memorable outdoor experience.
But we need your help to make this a success.
Leaders and parents need to make some preparations for this once-a-decade camporee. Here's how you can enhance the enjoyment of your Scouts at ScoutQuest 100:
Plan your day: Get a sense of where activities are and what is planned by visiting www.scoutquest100.org and viewing the ScoutQuest 100 map. It shows all campsites, program areas, trading posts, locations of religious services and more.
Text Messaging: Sign up to receive text messages during ScoutQuest 100 by texting the word SCOUTQUEST to 41513. (Standard text messaging and data rates apply. You must be age 13 or older to participate without parental permission.) Text messaging provided by Anchor Mobile Marketing. Parking, Crowd Information: Want to know where the shortest lines are? Bring your iPhone, Blackberry or other smart phone and followwww.twitter.com/scoutquest100. Want to share information on Twitter during the event? Enter the hashtag #sq100 in your status update or search for the hashtag for information.
Parking: Read The Duffle Blog post on the more than 8,000 parking spaces available throughout Forest Park. With some planning and patience, you can park and get your Scouts to the program areas with relative ease.
Friday Check-In: If possible, units spending the weekend should send a leader to your district headquarters approximately 30 minutes before the unit arrives. This will enable your leader to check in and learn where you will be camping. Units can then set up camp immediately upon arrival. The leader will receive your unit's wristbands, emblems, overnight parking passes and an Adventure Guide for each participant.
Friday Night: For those camping, there are plenty of activities after your tents are pitched. You can visit the Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Zoo or weather permitting, the Saint Louis Astronomical Society will have telescopes near the Planetarium. Shakespeare in the Park will present Hamlet at 8 p.m.
Saturday Check-In: For Cub Scouts and Venturers coming on Saturday, parking and registration will be from 7 to 11 a.m. at the upper MUNY parking lot. If there are dens arriving at different times on Saturday, leaders may pick up their wristbands and leave the rest of the pack's packet at registration. Individuals will not be checked in. Walk-up participants can pay fees at the registration area.
Free Flashlight, Headlight: The first 12,500 registered participants and staff to check in at ScoutQuest 100 will receive a free flashlight, headlight and batteries, courtesy of Energizer.
Free Segway Rides: Scouts and Venturers 12 years of age and older and between 100 and 260 pounds may ride one of six Segways free of charge. Anyone under 18 must have a signed release form; over 18 can sign their own. Helmets must be worn.
Geocaching, Digital Scavenger Hunt: Scouts may bring GPS units, digital cameras or cell phones with cameras to the Quest for Technology area for geocaching and a digital scavenger hunt. For Folks At Home: Tell parents, grandparents and siblings they can follow their Scouts and friends by reading stories and viewing photos at www.scoutquest100.org, the Duffle Blog, and the following social media sites:
Thank you for delivering Scouting's promise to tens of thousands of youth members throughout our council.
