Experience Corps Receives $2.8 Million from U.S. Department of Justice for Mentoring Programs
in Boston, Cleveland, NYC, San
Francisco, and Tucson Generations Incorporated to Receive $185,000 per Year for 3 Years
When an excellent
volunteer program produces major literacy gains in under-performing children, it
garners national attention. Experience Corps affiliates in 5 cities, including
Boston's
Generations Incorporated, will share this three year grant from the Department
of Justice (DOJ) to provide important literacy interventions. In addition to
Generations Incorporated, Experience Corps affiliates in Cleveland, New York City,
Tucson, and San Francisco will share the award over a three
year period, beginning October 2009. This is the first
time that local Experience Corps projects have collaborated on a national level
for federal funds. Lester Strong, national Experience Corps CEO says, "The $2.8M grant from the US Department of Justice marks a significant milestone
for Experience Corps. It
signals that our academic mentoring model has been recognized as an effective way to transform the lives of thousands of deserving children."
Thanks to a
rigorous evaluation by Washington University, we can unequivocally state
that our Experience Corps program helps students increase their literacy skills
by 60%.
This highly
competitive grant reflects the priority that the DOJ's Office of Juvenile
Justice and Delinquency Prevention places on prevention and intervention. Over
$189 million dollars were awarded to mentoring programs across the nation.

In Honor of Senator Ted Kennedy, We're Serving Greater Boston
This year over 300 Experience Corps members and 65
AmeriCorps members will work with hundreds of children who need help
with reading and writing. By the end of the year, we
will have amassed more than 140,000 hours of volunteer service. The impact will
be huge. And we will do this in honor of Senator Kennedy and his lifetime of service with the hope that many more Americans will extend themselves to others in service.
The Kennedy family's commitment to service over
the past 50 years is a legacy unmatched by anyone. Ted was a huge proponent of
national service, and one of his final acts was to co-author a bill that would
greatly increase the size of the AmeriCorps Program, a bill that carries his
name, and was signed by the President in April 2009.
Like his brothers before
him, Ted believed in the idealism of America. Let us all make service our priority and our privilege - to honor Senator Kennedy and his lifetime of service.
