The Power of Us

What an amazing thing it was to witness history unfold in Tunisia and Egypt! I was blessed to have been staying with some friends during the Egyptian revolution, and having access to television gave me a rare glimpse of history-in-the-making via the friendly folks at CNN (and every other cable channel). I sat transfixed by the unfolding events, praying that the violence against the protesters would quickly end and shedding tears of joy when Mubarak finally resigned. It was hard to believe that not one, but two, countries immersed in decades-old government corruption, economic devastation and police brutality could rise up and defeat such powerful, political machines! And it all started with a thought and a feeling...the time for change is NOW.
It was thrilling to see hundreds of thousands of people -- some say up to two million in Tahrir Square -- gathering in protest for the betterment of their lives and those of their children. I was moved by their courage, even in the face of dangerous, and even lethal, responses from the police force and the regime's security detail. Despite the threats and attacks, the protesters just kept going; they never let up. They never let their seemingly-insurmountable odds deter them from their goal. They persevered. They believed with all of their hearts that a better nation was possible. Through their bravery, conviction, unity and sacrifice, they affected large-scale change in the span of a few short weeks.
Just imagine what else is possible when we put our minds and hearts together! Can we imagine the end of worldwide poverty? Can we imagine potable water for every living inhabitant on earth? Can we imagine a prosperous economy based on clean energy and renewable sources? Can we imagine the end of war, terrorism, and violence against another? I know those sound like lofty goals, but I bet those people in Cairo never thought in a million years that they would see an end to the reign of Hosni Mubarak. Yet, it happened nonetheless.
Let's take this moment to be unafraid of what these collective awakenings in the Middle East mean to us. We do not need to fear some phantom Islamic Fundamentalist uprising. The Egyptians and Tunisians protested for secular reasons, not religious ones. The Christian Science Monitor, widely known to be one of the most unbiased and comprehensive news sources out there, says that fear of Middle East freedom is not based in reality. People in the Middle East want the same things we do -- health and personal safety, food on the table, a roof over their heads, a job paying decent wages, and a proper education for their kids. It's time to celebrate their quest for freedom, not fear it. It's also time to trust that their new governments will be in alignment with the needs of their citizens, and the world will move to a greater place of peace and prosperity for each and every one of us.
My hope is that we can harness that same power displayed on the streets of Tunisia and Egypt to affect great change right here, not only in our individual lives, but also in our communities, both local and global. We can make a difference. We can make this world a better place. Our time is NOW. It's time to engage. What cause is Spirit pointing you toward? What injustice is calling out to you? Where can you help? As Gandhi said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world.", or as the Philospher Nike once said, "Just Do It."
Thank you for your continued support, and I wish you a healthy, happy and abundant month of March! Bring on the Spring!!!

Under the Dome
I have been loving my Sunday services at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community! Dancing has been such a big part of my recent healing journey that I decided to do my own brand of Spirit Dance at LHSC. Before I deliver each service, I throw caution (and ego) to the wind, shaking my Divine Booty to the sacred sounds of Jai Uttal so as to get me fully into Presence and Power. It has been utterly delicious, even if it is a bit confusing for those attendees who watch in stunned disbelief. :)
My service this month will be on Sunday, March 20th at 10:30am, and is titled "Seeing and Singing into the Mirror". I will be sharing a message on how many of the things we experience in our lives are really just emanations of our own emotional material. If we want to have a more joyful, prosperous and loving external world, we first need to look at the stuff in our interior worlds that are not in alignment with our Divine Truth. We are excited to have Susan Shehata, a well-known Kirtan musician, radio host and healer, perform for us and help us sing our prayers. (Susan was originally scheduled to play at LHSC in November, but the ice storm got in the way. Hopefully, we'll be done with the ice storms and blizzards by then!)
Finally, I am pleased to be introducing LHSC's latest spiritual cinema offering, Tar Creek. Tar Creek is a documentary about the worst environmental disaster you've never heard of. The exclusive Minneapolis showing will be on Friday, March 4th at 7:00pm and admission is $10. For more information on the movie, please visit www.TarCreekFilm.com. I hope to see you there!

Stuff I Love
Last January, I received an email from a Rose Report reader giving me a book recommendation, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, saying she thought I would enjoy it. Since I was in the market for a new book to read, I put it on my library list. Boy, was I glad I did.
The Glass Castle is a extraordinary memoir of a young girl's tumultuous, impoverished childhood in the hands of two very unorthodox, unhealthy, yet very loving parents. While the author could have taken some cheap shots at her parents or portrayed her story in a maudlin, "poor me" light, she approaches her experiences with the innocence and openness of a child. Somehow we never pity her, even when she is enduring the most horrific living conditions. It is a testament to her character that she was able to rise above unbelievable odds to become a healthy, grounded woman capable of such compassionate, non-judgmental insight.
I had often picked up The Glass Castle and put it down for fear that it was another one of those uber-depressing memoirs. I'm so glad that I finally took the cue to read this incredible, bestselling, award-winning book. Check it out when you have a chance! It's a delight.
