Dear friends and colleagues,
Another Father's Day, another slim chance for some respect for us Dads. Why is it "Mother's Day" is celebrated with reverence; "Father's Day," more like "Oh, him, again!?" We are so misunderstood. Woody Allen spoke for all us hunters and gatherers when he noted:
"My father worked for the same firm for twelve years. They fired him. They replaced him with a tiny gadget - this big - that does everything my father does, only it does it much better. The depressing thing is, my mother ran out and bought one!"

Get proactive, "occupy" something or other, be sure to celebrate your Dad or grad by sending money, gifts, IPO certs, Apple stock and, for sure, an Awareables inspiration or two. A monster hug will work.
Dads....ummm, rule!

1. "LOOK AWAY" DURING INJECTIONS
| We can do this!
A study in the May issue of the journal, PAIN ( would we kid you?), suggests that past experience, along with the standard pep talk ("this may sting a little"), has a major influence on one's perception of the pain intensity. German investigators tested a number of participants, monitoring their behavior while they were viewing an injection and/or being told, (to paraphrase), and "...this probably won't be fun."
The conclusions drawn were that "...clinicians may be advised to provide information that reduces a patient's expectation about the strength of forthcoming pain prior to an injection." Also, that "...viewing a needle prick leads to enhanced pain perception...providing empirical evidence in favor of the common advice NOT to look at the needle prick when receiving an injection.
Are they kidding!? Every Dad alive could have saved the researchers a lot of time and energy. We NEVER look - it increases the chance of passing out.

3. MEN'S DESKS ARE GERMIER
| |
Is there no end to our humiliation?
A recent study funded by Clorox Corp., published in the journal PLoS ONE, identified at least 500 species of bacteria in the 90 business offices tested in San Francisco, New York and Tucson. Apparently, men's offices had a 10-20% higher bacterial count compared to women's, the microbes coming primarily from skin, nasal oral or intestinal cavities. Obviously a flawed study!
The rationale, as described by the researchers is just not acceptable (by us, men), i.e. that we're "less hygienic,..wash our hands less frequently and are commonly perceived to have more slovenly nature....and men are typically bigger, and thus have a greater surface area for bacteria to live and shed."
Maybe bigger, maybe more surface area...but we draw the line on the slovenly thing! Except for sometimes...
