Special Interest Money Limit Measure Qualifies
|
| An initiative to limit special interest campaign contributions has qualified for the November 2012 ballot.
The measure would ban corporate and labor contributions to candidates and prohibit political contributions through payroll deductions.
The Stop Special Interest Money Now Act "seeks to end the toxic pay-for-play politics by which corporations and unions corrupt politicians in Sacramento and throughout California's cities and counties," according to the measure's campaign.
Long-time Californian and former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz has joined a growing coalition of taxpayers, good government advocates and business leaders in support of the initiative, which will fundamentally reform the state's campaign finance system.
"The Stop Special Interest Money Now Act is a vital step toward reforming California's dysfunctional political system. This initiative gets to the heart of one of the most corrosive elements in politics: campaign contributions," said Shultz.
"For too long, special interest money has dominated our politics, muting the voice of average Californians. So often a law is passed not because it's good for California, but because it will benefit one well-heeled campaign contributor or another. Politicians have become less responsive to the people and far too concerned with their contributors. Stop Special Interests will reform corrupt pay-for-play politics in our state."
The California Labor Federation complains that "This measure would severely restrict union members in both the public and private sector from having a voice in our political process. Every union in California would be impacted."
In fact, the measure doesn't restrict union members. It just assures that their money can't be taken through payroll deduction and can't be taken without their consent.
You can read the text of the initiative here. To learn more about the initiative or to endorse it, visit the Stop Special Interest Money Now campaign website.
