CPD Newsletter

September 2011

Message from the Director

With the beginning of the new academic year, all of us at CPD would like to welcome the returning and entering students in the Master of Public Diplomacy program.  During several introductory meetings with the new students, I found their range of interests and expertise to be dazzling.  And of course, I know full well that the second-year students are terrific young scholars.  So, welcome all.

CPD's major endeavor this year will be its Water Diplomacy Initiative, which will feature a number of publications and events, including a major conference early in 2012.   We are working closely with USC's Viterbi School of Engineering and other campus partners on this, and I expect it to be one of the most important projects CPD has undertaken.  Please watch the CPD website for developments.

Our initial public event this fall was a panel marking the tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001.  The panel discussion, titled "Ten Years Later - U.S. Public Diplomacy in the Arab World," underscored the significance of public diplomacy and the challenges that remain as the United States seeks to build a new relationship with Arab countries.  We did not emerge with foolproof solutions, but this is a discussion that must continue, and CPD looks forward to contributing to it.

Warm regards,
Philip Seib
Director, USC Center on Public Diplomacy

"U.S. Public Diplomacy in a Post 9/11 World"

The sixth paper in the 2011 series of CPD Perspectives, "U.S. Public Diplomacy in a Post-9/11 World: From Messaging to Mutuality," by CPD Research Fellow (2009-2011) Kathy R. Fitzpatrick has been released.

The 10th anniversary of 9/11 is a distinct marker from which Fitzpatrick analyzes the last decade of American public diplomacy. Fitzpatrick relates dialogue theory to and constructs a framework for evaluation of current public diplomacy practices globally, and discusses whether governments can truly move from messaging to mutuality.

The latest issue of PDiN Monitor takes a closer look at Sports Diplomacy. Sports play an important role as a public diplomacy tool. From the Summer and Winter Olympic Games to the World Cup and the Tour de France -- all can impact the relationships of governments with their citizens, and between people on a regional and even global scale.

Read Barry Sanders' Feature Article, Sport as Public Diplomacy, for a discussion on the significance of sports in diplomacy.
