Summer 2011

Message from the Director

During the summer months, CPD is building the foundation for our new Water Diplomacy Initiative, which will feature a major conference early in 2012.  This month I spent several days at the Water Leaders' Summit in Singapore, exploring the fascinating mix of technology and policy that may enable people around the world to secure a decent supply of safe water.  My report from Singapore can be found here.

The Water Diplomacy Project will also include research projects and publications that will illustrate how improving water quality can be effective public diplomacy.  This is part of CPD's commitment to advancing public diplomacy built on substantive service rather than relying on more superficial approaches.

CPD is also about to begin its annual Summer Institute in Public Diplomacy - two weeks of intensive training for diplomats from around the world.  More about that in our next newsletter.

Warm regards,
Philip Seib
Director, USC Center on Public Diplomacy

With its huge population, China provides an PDiN May/June 2011irresistible market for other nations' films, ranging from wild action movies to those featuring animated pandas.

Read Stanley Rosen's insightful feature article,

"The Use of Film for Public Diplomacy: Why Hollywood Makes a Stronger Case for China", for a discussion of how American filmmakers are catering to the booming Chinese market, and how China uses film as a public diplomacy tool to enhance its image at home and abroad.
