Message from the Director

As turmoil continues in the Middle East, CPD is featuring blogs and a news monitor related to public diplomacy aspects of these tectonic shifts in international affairs. We invite you to check the offerings on this page and to consider sending us a blog about these events.

Our major conference, "Faith Diplomacy: Religion and Global Publics," will take place on the USC campus Friday, March 25, with a follow-up briefing at the USC Washington, D.C. office Monday, April 11. Information about our work on faith diplomacy can be found on our website. This conference will be merely the first part of our continuing research and publication efforts related to this topic. You are invited to join us for the campus and Washington events.

We are pleased to announce the first bilingual publication in our CPD Perspectives on Public Diplomacy series, "The Power of the European Union in Global Governance: A Proposal for a New Public Diplomacy/El Poder de la Union Europea en el Gobierno Global: Propuesta para una Nueva Diplomacia Publica," by Teresa La Porte, a professor at Spain's Universidad de Navarra and a former CPD Visiting Scholar.

Lastly, CPD released its 5-year Strategic Plan (January 2011-December 2015).

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions about our work, and we hope you will help spread the word about CPD's activities.

Sincerely,

Philip Seib

Director, USC Center on Public Diplomacy

New Issue of CPD Perspectives on European Union in Public

Diplomacy

In this bilingual (English/Spanish) edition of CPD Perspectives, Teresa La Porte, Professor of International Communication at Universidad de Navarra (Spain) and past CPD Visiting Scholar, explores "The Power of the European Union in Global Governance: A Proposal for a New Public Diplomacy." She asserts, "Europe still maintains all of the conditions necessary to practice an effective power of persuasion (soft power), an ability to combine this power with still important economic and military resources (smart power), and the capacity to establish international norms of behavior (normative power)," and offers four suggestions as to how the European Union can bolster its public diplomacy activities.
