August 2010

Message from the Director

The CPD family expanded this month with
the addition of Naomi Leight as our
 Assistant Director for Research and
Publications.  A recent graduate of USC's
Master in Public Diplomacy program, Naomi
is a wonderful researcher and manager -
thorough and well-organized - and will be
a great asset.  If you ever have questions
about our many research projects or publications, please feel free to contact her at leight@usc.edu.

CPD was among the hosts for a visit to USC by Dennis Mulhaupt and Enders Wimbush, members of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees operations of the Voice of America and other U.S. government broadcast organizations.  In my meeting with them, I underscored our continuing interest in doing research and evaluation related to international broadcasting that might prove useful to the BBG.  We discussed ways that BBG's broadcasting might modernize its content.

I also spent a day in Tampa, Florida at the headquarters of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to learn about the work of their Digital Engagement Team, which presents U.S. viewpoints and challenges extremist and inaccurate statements on numerous Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu Internet forums.  The team's mission is to undermine violent extremist activities, clearly an important military responsibility and also a form of public diplomacy. The U.S. military is a major player in this field and handles some of its tasks more adroitly than do other parts of the government.

As August draws to its end, classes have begun.  It's great to have the students back as partners in our work.

Sincerely,
Philip Seib
