Message from the Director |
Our CPD conference, "Science Diplomacy and the Prevention of Conflict" was a great success, with thoughtful discussion and excellent attendance. Our time line of topics extended from interaction among U.S. and Soviet physicists during the Cold War to a visit by American scientists to North Korea just a week before our conference. We had a good look at what is going on today: Germany helping Indonesia with tsunami alerts; India and China working together to capitalize on each other's research; Arab, Iranian, and Israeli nuclear physicists devising plans for peaceful uses of nuclear energy; U.S. emergency room physicians providing online assistance to their colleagues around the world; and many others.
The conference underscored the breadth of public diplomacy. Governments were principal actors in just a few of the cases we discussed, but national interests were nevertheless being significantly advanced.
Part of CPD's mission is to explore the peripheries of public diplomacy - issues that receive little attention from governments or news media but still provide valuable aid from one country to the people of another. This is the essence of good public diplomacy: substance, not mere advertising.
Watch CPD's Web site for the proceedings of this conference, which we will publish soon.
