Message from the Director |
This month begins with CPD's principal annual conference, "Science Diplomacy and the Prevention of Conflict," which will take place February 4-5 at the Davidson Conference Center on
the USC campus. We are bringing together
panels of academics, scientists and policy-makers who believe that science provides venues for
public diplomacy that may transcend the politics of the moment. As can
be seen in the conference agenda, we will address an array of cases
that illustrate how science diplomacy works and also consider the
practical aspects of making this a more prominent part of public
diplomacy. Our cosponsor for this conference is the United States Institute of Peace, with which we hope to form a lasting
partnership and engage in other joint ventures.
Then, on February 9, CPD and USC's School
of Journalism will jointly host a forum with John Maxwell Hamilton, dean of the Manship School of Communication at Louisiana
State University. Professor Hamilton has written a superb history of
American foreign correspondence, Journalism's Roving Eye (LSU Press, 2009), a topic that journalists and public diplomats alike should understand thoroughly.
Finally, I am pleased to announce the launch of CPD's newest
publication: PDiNMonthly, an electronic publication which will bring together
the latest PD news, analysis, publications and events in one central
place every month. We hope you will enjoy this new periodical and as
always, we welcome your comments at cpd@usc.edu.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our conference later this week.
