>> The dark side

Police recently laid charges against 11 people, including two tow truck drivers, for staging a collision on one of Canada's busiest highways.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that this sends a strong message to future schemers.

Greetings!

I don't know how many people see it, but every week we put a tidbit on the side of the newsletter under "Can you believe?"

It's usually something interesting one of us has seen recently, often that wouldn't fit anywhere else in Collision Repair magazine--fun facts, interesting statistics or just plain oddities.

This week, it's fraud. From the way it sounds, it was a pretty elaborate operation. There are 11 people being charged, two tow truck drivers implicated, and apparently nine fake injuries.

I'm picturing a sleazy Ocean's 11, except the implications could be pretty significant.

I was wondering if you could provide some feedback: would you like to see a feature on this subject some day? Has this issue directly impacted your business in the past?

Let me know--if there's enough interest maybe we could put our muckraker hats on and dig in.

See you next week. Take care,

-Joe Rayment

Correction: In the story "LKQ-Keystone Brampton officially opens its doors," we identified the location as being the official distributor of US muscle car products company Goodmark Industries. Goodmark has since been in touch to say that the facility is one of the official distributors, but that there are also others, including Cross Canada Replacement Parts.
Sincerely,

The Collision Repair Team.
