Greetings!

No matter how old I get, this time of year will always make me want to buy new school supplies. Luckily I have kids, so I can go ahead and they'll reap the benefits. My eldest daughter starts grade one this year, so I'm sure she'll find a use for that graphing calculator with trigonometric functions.

We might not be full-time students anymore, but I think September is still a great time of year to learn something new. Why not take a few hours and take a course? Building hard skills is a good thing, but there's lots of other learning opportunities available. Management training springs to mind, but there are other ways of improving yourself and your business that aren't even directly related to the industry.

Grab a course calendar for your local college or university and flip through it. I opened one - completely at random - and found a three-part, six-hour seminar called "Civic Affairs: How Local Regulations are Made and Changed." Right off the bat I can see how that might be handy to know for an entrepreneur. What other hidden educational gems might be lurking?

Can We Expect More Total Loss Vehicles in 2008?

Audatex has released the new issue of its quarterly collision repair publication, Audatex Directions. Audatex Directions provides vehicle insurers and collision repairers with key industry trends and in-depth analysis on the auto physical damage market, as well as global best practices that can be implemented locally.

The latest issue features an article by Michael T. Anderson and Brian Granger that extrapolates from current trends to predict more total loss claims in 2008 and 2009. From the article:

"We believe several key economic factors are driving this trend: the rising costs of raw materials, a steady decline in used vehicle wholesale prices and an older insured vehicle population on the road. As prices for basic commodities such as steel, aluminum and petroleum continue their dramatic rise due to increasing global demand, the intrinsic value of the materials in vehicles is increasing. These recent price increases will impact
replacement part prices."
