Swimming in debt: The navy didn't foresee their repair bill for a submarine being so costly. When technicians in Halifax found a dent in the HMCS Victoria five years ago, the navy estimated a repair of $400,000. The actual cost of the repaired vehicle came back at $1,039,494.

Futuristic Pumps: A Dutch entrepreneur has unveiled the word's first gas station robot. The mechanical device consists of a robot arm with special sensors. It uses a motor to take itself out of the pump, opens your gas tank, unscrews the cap and inserts the nozzle, and fills up your vehicle. However, to use the device you have to register with the gas station so the machine knows what model car it is.

Slow Going: The first patrol cars owned by the British Metropolitan Police were so slow they couldn't even break the 20 mph speed limit enforced at the time.

Which Way?: Until 1923 in Italy, motorists could drive on the right-hand side of the road in rural areas, but had to drive on the left in towns and cities.

Greetings!

You know, in some ways a magazine editor is very fortunate indeed. The editor not only gets to learn new things about a fascinating business every day, he also gets to read insightful, informative articles literally months before anyone else. It's never boring, although I imagine the editors of Brown Paper Bag Collector and Frodor's Guide to Carpet Lint probably feel differently.

City Collision Services First in PEI to Go Waterborne

By Ryan O'Connor

A change in mentality is valuable only when it results in a change of practice; something Paul Gaudet, manager of City Collision Services, knows very well.

About seven months ago, Paul and his staff began thinking more about environmental issues, and what their collision centre could do to help.

The result was a transformation of the shop's practices, including using greener cleaning products, consuming less electricity with new compressors, and finally, becoming the first collision center in Prince Edward Island to convert to waterborne.

"We're doing things now that won't make any difference to me, but for my grandchildren several years down the road this will have a big impact," says Paul. He cites the environmental benefits as well as the workers' well being as the main reasons for the conversion.

WISE WORDS

"Most of the time people forget I'm there, as my sole purpose is only to collect data and not to disturb the technician's productivity."
