Saving you future headaches.

The Mythical Five Minutes

We invite you to read this month's edition of the Mendelson Active Solutions, from beginning to end. It's going to take only five minutes... Or will it?

There is nothing that takes "only five minutes". More than twenty years of consulting experience tells me so. When someone tells us, "I have a five minute question", that's code for "I think I have a really simple issue that you should be able to answer in no time" (I've still yet to find out how long "no time" takes, but that is a topic for another time). As direct and to-the-point as one wants to be, it takes several minutes just to capture exactly what the issue is, then there may be time needed for establishing a remote connection to the user (if needed), and finally resolving the issue. But when touching upon an issue, invariably, we tend to uncover other things that need assistance, maybe even the root cause of what the issue was. Hence, the minutes (and time) fly by. In essence, if "five-minute" questions really took only five minutes to resolve, we would be doing a disservice to our clients.

Not surprisingly, I am not immune to the five-minute syndrome: Recently, one of my team members needed my attention. Funny enought, I replied saying that I would get back to him right after my next client call, and that it would be only a five-minute call. He replied laughingly, "I am going to time you". I got back to him in no less than ten minutes, proving once again that even if I think I can initiate a five-minute conversation, invariable it is going to take longer, no matter what I say, intend, or plan to do. Five minutes is never five minutes.

Want a simple example that is outside of our world of computers and consulting? Take the game of basketball. When a game ends in a tie, the teams say to each other, "Let's settle this - it's going to take only five minutes." An overtime period is designed to be five minutes - that is, five minutes of clock or playing time, not five minutes of human time. Twenty or thirty minutes later, one of the teams emerges winner. Obviously there, five minutes was not really five minutes. Just like in accounting and technology consulting.

I end with the premise that there is nothing that takes "only five minutes". When we field "five-minute" questions from clients, we feel we depart from the time-space continuum - we find that is when five minutes takes longer than five minutes. Think about it - that is only 300 seconds. When put in that frame, it does not seem that long at all. And it is not.

How long did it take you to read this newsletter, from beginning to end? It was going to take only five minutes...

Paranoid is a good thing, unless you're crazy

"Is it safe to bank online?"  I have had several clients ask me that.  I answer with a quick "NO!"  Most look at me in shock as they don't expect that sharp of an answer.   I then follow up with "But it sure is convenient."  Obviously, online banking is a reality and we all use it.  So you have to balance the two.

As a security minded technician, I read lots of current trends with computer security and attacks.  Some of the real stories I read makes me shiver with fright.  Some say that the internet's dark underworld has a main goal -- to steal your money.  How they do this and how to protect your computer, is for another article.  For now, we just want you to use your online bank in a worry free and secure manor.

One of the most secure computer environments is a read-only bootable operating system.  You turn on your computer with a special CD-ROM inside.  This will allow you to boot up to a different operating system, usually Linux.  Once you boot to this operating system it is like turning on a brand new computer.  You can then browse to your bank.  It might ask for additional security questions because this operating system will not have your previous cookies.  After you turn it off, nothing is saved to the hard drive.   This is virus and infection proof.   Currently, another safe computer to bank online is your Apple iPad or phone.

Get those grills ready, bring that sunblock out, it's summertime!

Summer is the time of year that everyone's ready for some fun in the sun. Kids are out of school, everything moves a little slower, the grill is out, and people are a little more relaxed. It must mean vacation is finally right around the corner!

For many, summer is the slow time of the year. Add that to the fact that many people go into vacation mode in the summer, the summer months could turn into to a bit of a sluggish time for your business.

Don't forget to enjoy your vacations, everyone needs that time away. But at the same time, don't take the summer for granted. Just because it's slow doesn't mean it's time to slack off. Summer is a great time to jump your business ahead. Take advantage of your time, get ready early for your busy time of the year, review your processes and work flow to make sure you are being efficient. Refresh your website, redo your business cards, do all that work that you're always pushing to the side as non-priority. These months where many of your clients are also taking vacations could prove to be very valuable. Make the most of it.

Enjoy your summer!
