QuickBooks Tip
Backups
This is a lesson many have learned the hard way. Anyone who has used a computer for more than a few months knows that it is not a matter of "if" your hard disk will crash or your data file will become unusable, but a matter of "when." You can configure QuickBooks to remind you to back up the file every so often or even create a backup for you automatically. That's only half the process though. Make sure to put that backup in some form of external storage. Having a backup inside your computer that just crashed will do you no good. Save yourself future headaches and set up automatic backups to an external hard drive or something of the like. |

From Vegas with Love (and Magic!)
We recently participated in the 2012 Association of Partners for Public Lands (APPL) convention in Las Vegas. Our booth at this trade show was a resounding success. We showcased how QuickBooks Point of Sale, together with QuickBooks financial software, solves the needs of national parks' stores, keeping track of inventory, sales, customers, and memberships. Other vendors also inquired and came onboard the QuickBooks solutions we offer.
Vegas is still the same entertainment center that many people know - lots of lights, sights, sounds, flavors, views (and vices!) The walk between the hotel rooms and the convention center or the hotel entrance goes through every hotel's money-making center: the casino! That's where many folks show their love by making "donations" to the hospitality industry (!!) -- "donations" in the form of cash at the roulette, blackjack, and other tables...
Many popular shows in Las Vegas include a mix of humor, music, and magic. It was exciting to attend a show where magic meets a rock star; the performer screamed at the audience before every trick, "Are... you... ready...!"
In a way, the mix was a good reminder of our own work. The combination of our accounting background with the expert knowledge of technology and QuickBooks software gives our clients an unparalleled edge. On consulting assignments, we perform "magic" when implementing and supporting business systems while ensuring that the accounting is accurate in order to produce proper management and financial reporting, making us feel like "rock stars".
So the next time we show up at a consulting job, we'll walk in screaming... ARE - YOU - READY !!!

"Why am I getting infected? I have anti-virus installed!"
Sometimes, I get this question from clients. Most users think that just having an up-to-date anti-virus gives them full projection. I wish it was that simple. There are several vectors of entry to infect a computer. Some users get re-infected every few months. This can be frustrating. Some users get upset and ask why they are paying for anti-virus if it is not working. Rest assured, the anti-virus is working. The problem is that malware has more than one way to get into a system.
The main question is how secure are each of your computers. No one can guarantee 100% infection-free computers (not even a Mac, for those of you Apple fans!) In the past few years most of the computer infections were from viruses. Nowadays, a computer is mostly attacked through unpatched software. Not only do you have to make sure the computer's operating system is updated every month, but also any 3rd party software.
The best way is to set your users as non-local admins. This makes it so the users are unable to install software. This way, for example, a virus would not be able to infect the computer because the user is unable to install software. Most owners don't like this because it is inconvenient when they want to install or update software. Do you want to know a personal secret? I run my home computers with non-admin accounts.

The Dreaded Tax Season...
It's everyone's favorite time of year, when we procrastinate on filing our taxes until the very last minute... Don't wait until 11:59 on April 17th (you even get a couple of extra days this year!). The longer you wait the more things can go wrong. For one, if you wait until the last minute like everyone else, just scheduling an appointment with your accountant or tax preparer can be a major hassle. If you expect a refund you have even more reason to file early. The closer you wait until April 17th the more people will be filing and the longer it will take to recieve your refund. So file early and feel like this guy...
Don't procrastinate and end up like this guy...

Happy tax day... this year, April 17th!
