F2 is Your Friend

One of the most important function keys available in QuickBooks is the F2 key.  It provides crucial QuickBooks information.

The F2 key opens up the Product Information dialog box (also accessible using the combination of CTRL + 1 keys).

Within this dialog box you can find the license number and product number.  A copy of these numbers should be stored elsewhere in case the need arises.

Other important information found here is the company file size.  A large file size is a good indicator that it may be time to upgrade QuickBooks Pro or Premier to QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, for example).

Quotable Quotes

The great danger for most of us is not setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark.
-Michelangelo

What we must decide is how we are valuable, not how valuable we are.
-Edward Z. Friedenberg

There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.
-Colin Powell, Sec. of State, 2001 to 2005

Goooooooooooooooooooal!

32 countries -- one goal (or many)...

We are a few hours away from the beginning of the 2010 World Cup -- a month-long celebration of the passion for the world's most popular sport, football soccer.

The World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world.  The last World Cup was viewed by an estimated 26.3 billion -- that's four times the population of earth.  Not to mention the 715.1 million that saw the final match -- one ninth of the planet's population!

Over the next month, thirty-two teams will be playing towards a common goal.  Or common goals.  At the risk of sounding ironic, in this case, "goals" are both figurative and literal.  There is no greater feat in sports than the scoring of a goal in competitive world-class football soccer, more so in a World Cup; the above viewership numbers prove that.  In football soccer, by definition, a goal occurs when the entire ball passes over the goal line between the goal posts and under the crossbar and no rules are violated (such as touching the ball with the hand or arm).  When you think about it, that is very specific.  So specific, it sounds simple.  Just put the ball completely over the goal line inside of the three posts and don't break any rules.  Eerily similar to completing any goal in life.  Simple, easy?

With proper planning and preparation, most goals can be realized.  Add uncompromised effort and passion to the mix, and achievement of goals becomes almost a sure thing.  This reminds of the story of an unsung hero in the 1986 World Cup final match.  A player that earned a starting spot on the tournament squad due to a popular veteran's failing health.  He scored the first goal of the game for the eventual champs.  The same player was hit hard on a shoulder midway through the game, causing an injury that would typically take a player out of a game -- were this any other game.  He told the team doctor to not even think of taking him out; instead, he literally bit a hole in his jersey to rest his thumb and nurse his injured arm to keep on playing, through unbearable pain.  It's such uncompromised effort that makes the difference in anything we set out to do.

So, for the next month, whether you are a fan of the world's most popular game or not, remember to score a goooooooooooooooooooal (or more)...!

Cost of the 2010 Census

The cost of this decade's Census will come to some $14.5 billion. That includes about $2.5 million spent on Super Bowl advertising, but the Census Bureau thinks it was worth the price to reach many of the 134 million households that will receive the 10-question form. The main costs:
  • $2.74 billion for follow up of those who didn't return their forms, the most costly individual part of the Census
  • $2.05 billion for IT systems used in the collection and assessment of information
  • $1.5 billion for regional and local offices and staff
  • $4.3 billion for various headquarters costs, planning, research and miscellaneous expenses
  • $257.2 million for postage
