Statewide Longitudinal Data System
|
Just last week Oregon was awarded $10.5 million to design
and implement a statewide longitudinal data system. Such a data system would
track student progress over time and connect student data with teacher data. The
grant will allow Oregon to expand upon its current systems and deepen the level
of data available. Oregon currently has three separate data systems that track
PreK-12, public two-year, and public four-year education systems respectively.
Although data has been combined from two or more databases in the past, it has
to be done manually. Continuing to have three separate databases prevents
researchers, educators, policymakers, and others from having easy access to
important data that spans the education system in Oregon. This grant will fund Project
ALDER: Advancing Longitudinal Data for Educational Reform. As the application describes it, "Project
ALDER creates P-12 teacher-student linkage for education data; integrates early
childhood data, student career/workforce data, and measurement of
post-secondary education success; and develops a comprehensive statewide data
quality plan." Project ALDER will put an emphasis on linking student and
teacher data. The project will also ensure that teachers have timely access to
the student data they need to inform their practice in the classroom. Oregon's application ranked second out of the 20 states that
received funding. Read the complete grant application: http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/pdf/Oregon2009ARRA.pdf What effect do you think a statewide longitudinal data
system will have on education in Oregon? Join the conversation at http://www.mentoringeducators.org/posts/statewide-longitudinal-data-system28.php
