Greetings!
The election for State Superintendent of Public Instruction
will likely be decided in just a few short weeks with only two candidates
running to lead the Oregon Department of Education. The State Superintendent's
Office can help shape education policy in Oregon and champion initiatives and
ideas that support effective teaching in the classroom. It is for this reason
that we are using this Teacher Effectiveness Update to summarize the
Superintendent candidates' proposals and promises. All of the following information comes from the candidates'
websites. We encourage you to dig
deeper and ask questions to understand how each candidate plans to improve
education in Oregon.

Susan Castillo writes,
"Oregon needs a Superintendent of Public Instruction that will be a
tireless champion for our students and our schools. We have an exciting
opportunity to move successful work forward so we can deliver the results we
all want--every student graduating well prepared for his or her next steps."
To reach the goal of graduating well-prepared students,
Castillo's agenda for the next four years includes: Fighting
for adequate and stable funding that our schools can count on year to
year. Promoting
more partnerships with business and industry to provide hands on
experience and training where students can apply what they learn in the
classroom and get a head start on a career and the job market. Further
expansion of programs that help at-risk students so they start school
ready to learn like Head Start, full-day kindergarten, and after-school
programs. Continuing
to promote high academic expectations and high expectations for student
behavior. Giving
our teachers a stronger voice when it comes to decisions affecting their
students and their classroom.
