Chalkboard helps eastern Oregon students get free Homework Help

Children and teenagers throughout eastern Oregon never have to be stumped by a tough homework assignment again. The Chalkboard Project awarded a grant to the Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO) to partner with Tutor.com to provide a free online tutor resource to 41,000 students in eastern Oregon. Students are able to connect to expert tutors via the Internet at 51 libraries serving 15 counties. Students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, those in introductory-level college courses, and adult learners can simply visit 51 local eastern Oregon libraries, their library's Web site, or LEO's Web site www.librariesofeasternoregon.org to get on-demand, free help from qualified tutors. "I would like to personally thank Chalkboard for this wonderful gift for students of all ages. Eastern Oregon has always been challenged financially, and, therefore, technologically. This opportunity to access high quality tutoring is genuinely appreciated." - Mary Finney, Public Services Librarian, Pendleton Public Library Read the complete press release...

Statesman Journal highlights Chalkboard Project
The Statesman Journal's Inside Business section recently dedicated August's " Inside Business" section to the "business of education." Essays representing different perspectives on public education were included by educators and local leaders. After hearing from Chalkboard as part of their research, the Statesman Journal Editorial Board believes that "Chalkboard presents the best, clearest path for improving K-12 schools. This is a rare opportunity, one that supercedes traditional political and educational turf. We ask all Oregonians--elected officials, political candidates, educators, parents and other Oregonians--to unequivocally endorse and support Chalkboard's work."

The Oregon State Board of Education identifies teacher quality as strategic priority
The Oregon State Board of Education has included educator quality as a strategic priority for the coming years. In a retreat last month, members of the Board adopted six key strategic priorities needed for student success in the next 18 months. Chalkboard believes that one of the single most important ways to improve schools is to reach out to teachers and help them get the professional development, mentoring and skills support they need. We applaud the Board's decision. View all of ODE priorities

Citizens' Corps member profile: Ford Morishita
Citizens'
Corps member Ford Morishita is an Oregon pioneer: He is one of the
first teachers in Oregon to be certified by the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards. The Clackamas High School biology
teacher is a former Teacher of the Year and a member of Chalkboard's Advisory Committee.
Why did you become a Citizens' Corps member? "I
believe in Chalkboard's Citizens' Corps mission, which is to
inform Oregonians about key policy issues in education, and to provide advocacy to effectively address and resolve these issues for all
students in Oregon."
What one or two things can we, as a state, do to have the biggest impact on the achievement of Oregon's students? "We
must secure adequate funding to support much needed professional
development for teachers, successful implementation of new Oregon
diploma requirements, and everyday Kindergarten."

Citizens' Corps reaches 500 member milestone!
You helped us do it! The Chalkboard Project's goal this year has been to recruit 500 Oregonians for our Citizens' Corps. To commemorate this milestone, we gave away three Fred Meyer gift certificates to our 499th , 500th and 501st Citizens Corps members. Congratulations to Canby teacher Carl Wilborn, McMinnville School Board member Francis Charbonnier and Linda McNeill of Step It Up, Inc. Click here to sign up!Learn more about Citizens' CorpsHave a creative way for us to invite people into the Citizens' Corps?Lyn Craig, a new Citizens' Corps member from Fossil and the director of the Libraries of Eastern Oregon did. Her idea: post a sign and box at each of the eastern Oregon libraries inviting library visitors to learn more about the Chalkboard Project and become involved in our mission to "Unite Oregonians to make our public schools among the nation's best." People come to libraries seeking knowledge and community information and Lyn's idea helps achieve both those goals. Great idea Lyn and one we're going to try! Got ideas??? Send them to: liesl@chalkboardproject.org. We'll share the ideas we receive in next month's Chalk Talk.

Staff Updates
As you've read here over the last few months, the Chalkboard Project has been spending the summer rebuilding its team. During the transition, we were very lucky to have Colin Fogarty serve as the Interim Communications Director. As many of you know, Colin came to the Chalkboard Project following a career in public radio. He headed back to public radio this month as the Regional News Editor of Northwest News. We thank him for his time at the Chalkboard Project and wish him the best in his new position!
