Greetings!
Miller Foundation joins Chalkboard as new major partner

The Chalkboard Project welcomes a new major supporter January 1, 2008 – the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation. The foundation, long a financial supporter of Chalkboard, is stepping up its commitment and joining the board of directors of Foundations for a Better Oregon, Chalkboard’s parent organization.
The Miller Foundation joins Chalkboard founders The Collins Foundation, The Ford Family Foundation, JELD-WEN Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust and The Oregon Community Foundation on the organization’s board.
“We are thrilled to welcome a longtime supporter of Chalkboard and Oregon’s public education initiatives to our board,” said Orcilia Zuniga Forbes, incoming chair of the Chalkboard/FBO board of directors. “The Miller Foundation brings new perspective to our work. Its commitment to Chalkboard is yet another endorsement of the important role foundations play in improving our schools.”
The James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation was established in 2002 to enhance Oregonians’ quality of life through support of the arts and education.
“Our foundation has strongly supported K-12 education projects that strengthen student achievement and success, so becoming more active in the Chalkboard Project’s work is a natural step for us,” said Charles Putney, president of the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation. “We are very encouraged by the work Chalkboard is doing to improve public schools in Oregon, and look forward to being a more significant part of its continued progress.”

And speaking of the Chalkboard board of directors . . .
A major “thank you” to Charlie Walker, who is ending a more than three-year tenure as
chair of the Foundations for a BetterOregon/Chalkboard Project board of directors. Walker has served on the board since its inception in 2004, first as a representative of The Ford Family Foundation board of trustees, and now as a representative of the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation board of directors. Walker, former president of Linfield College, has shepherded Chalkboard through its critical early years and been a strong advocate for the organization’s continued focus on engaging Oregonians in solving K-12 education challenges.

Taking over as chair is Orcilia Zuniga Forbes, who has served on the board since 2004 as a representative of Meyer Memorial Trust’s board of trustees. Forbes has a PhD in educational policy, and served in higher education positions throughout most of her career. She is former president of the City Club of Portland, and a graduate of the first class of the Oregon chapter of the American Leadership Forum.
