In April, the car won the Goodguys Street Rod d'Elegance crown and was named Goodguys/Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year in Columbus. Gail Phillips
 Photos courtesy Vicki Howard
by Vicki Howard for Sacramento VintageGail Phillips, STCA and BNI member, started racing at Bonneville in 1995 in a 1959 Austin Healy Sprite. Due to mechanical problems at that first salt meet, Gail managed her first run only one hour before the whole event was shut down. But driving away, still with the adrenalin pumping, she looked at the rear view mirror and thought "I've got to come back here and do this again". Since then, Gail has set 6 world records in two different vehicles. She is very proud to be the 7th women inducted into the 200 mph club and gives credit to crew chief Doug Odom for, she says, "the awesome job he does building my cars and motors". In 2001, Gail, Doug and Gail's husband Al shipped their Austin Healy Sprite over to Australia for SpeedWeek Australia at Lake Gairdner. Doug had crashed the car in the States only 6 weeks before shipping, but with a massive effort, managed to repair the car in time. Gail ran the Healy at 205.538 mph. Back in the States for 2008, Gail and her streamliner had their sights on a 276 mph record with the hope that 300 mph was not out of the question in the future. On day one of racing, Doug took the streamliner out for a shakedown run at 236 mph. A day and a half later, after a repair to a damaged oil line and an engine change, it was Gail's turn. Going through the 5 mile mark at 242 mph, after what seemed to be a successful run. Gail began her normal shut down procedure and released the high speed chute. The streamliner decided to lie down on its side and then pencil roll, leaving nose and tail sheet metal scattered down the track. Gail escaped with only a headache and some bruising. She said she may give the streamliner a rest now and go back to racing her Corvette. The record in the Corvette's class was 210 mph. After all, she says "... now it feels like a piece of cake. I can do 210. If I can do 242 upside down or sideways, I can do 210 fine." That's the way she's looking at it! Gail Phillips' story and others are featured in the 2-DVD set, Salt Flat Racer, copies of which can be purchased from Sacramento Vintage Ford. Just CLICK any of the photos. |
Axes & Axles Exhibit

Bass player Michael Anthony stands with his '33 Ford Roadster
Axes & Axles: Cars and guitars celebrated at the NHRA MuseumThe Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum (presented by the Auto Club of Southern California) opened a new exhibit celebrating cool custom cars and matching guitars, each owned by rock stars. Fender was a major contributor to the exhibit, this being the 60th anniversary of the Fender Telecaster, built just down the freeway in Fullerton, Calif. There are dozens of Fenders and other guitars on hand throughout the museum's "Hall of Champions." Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstein guitar sits next to Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony's flamed bass. Cars on display include Anthony's '33 Ford Roadster built by Boyd Coddington in 1994; Jeff Beck's '32 Ford Roadster--Jeff's daily driver when he is in the United States--rebuilt by Roy Brizio in 1982; and Eric Clapton's '47 Chevy Woody, also built by Brizio and completed the day before the exhibit opened. And what would a cars and guitars exhibit be without some Billy Gibbons entries? The mighty CadZZilla 1948 Cadillac built by Hot Rods by Boyd during that shop's rise to glory in 1988-89 flanks right center of the exhibit's middle, while Gibbons' new "Mexican Blackbird" 1960 Thunderbird (with matching guitar), finished this year by the So-Cal Speed Shop, sits to the left. In the middle is Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Jimmie Vaughan's pistachio '61 Caddy. CLICK the above photo to read the complete article courtesy Mark Vaughn over at Autoweek. Joe Streng, one of the helpful sales associates (parts counterman) at Sacramento Vintage, hits the Bonneville Salt Flats! All we received was this photo and the comment 'I DID IT!'We will have an update next time. Thanks Joe....what a blast! Here is the UPDATE from Joe:What is the tank from: I'm not sure. I know it is from the 1950's, I think its from a P38, steel gas drop tank. I paid $200.00 for it and hauled it out of the blackberry bushes in Colfax. It is 33" at the widest and is 105" long. It was originally 95". The engine: 1938 Ford V8-60. Originally 126 ci, bored .120 over to 149ci, ported and relieved. Winfield M-1 cam, early Edelbrock heads, custom Ford crab ignition, single Stromberg EGU carburetor, one gallon fuel tank, electric fuel pump, cooled by two truck heater cores. Engine built by Jim Correria, Hayward CA. The engine was donated to Joe by Sacramento Vintage, but was definitley not in the condition it is now in! It was a bit rough. The running gear: Model a front end, no front brakes. Early Halibrand quick change, Model A rear. Solid mounted to the chassis. Home built double rail chassis out of 2", .125 square tube. Roll cage out of 1-5/8, .125 DOM tube. Dual fire systems, Autometer gauges, sprint car steering gear. It runs in XF class at Bonneville. XF includes ALL Ford flathead V-8 engines, 1932 - 1953. The class record is 196 MPH. Because there is no official V8-60 class it is built/inspected to run 175+. It will never come CLOSE to that. My one run this year was 64.155 MPH. I had hoped for 75 MPH but there were too many rookie mistakes. It should do 100 MPH easily and I am shooting for 125+. Although there is no official V8-60 flathead record, my research shows they ran about 130 in the early 1950's. I did everything but build the engine. Why? Just for the fun of it!Joe Streng Meanwhile....back at the Sacramento Vintage Ford parts counter: Left to right- Dave, Steve, Joe, Ken, Doug and Jerry. |

HUGE thanks to the the guys at Hilborn, FAST, Accufab, Pacific Coast Powdercoating, AutoMeter, Redline Gauge Works, and Elegance Auto Interior for jamming 'round the clock to get the Raybestos RPU ready and dialed in before our shakedown session and video shoot. Just a few loose ends to button up before an appearance on Pinks All Out, and then SEMA... Fix and finish a few minor items... Another dyno session to tune the engine... Dial in the brakes... Plus the one-off Halibrand-style wheels from Intro should soon be finished, ready to be shod with the proper Coker-supplied Firestone Indy roadster tires. The Hot Rod TV episode chronicling the build will air again on SPEED this Saturday, September 11. -Code Name Coyote-9:30am ET, 8:30am CT, 7:30am MT, 6:30am PT CLICK Above |

They were traveling in 2 motor homes .....and the tourist in the middle of the photo? Their buddy wasn't able to make the trip this year so....they brought along a cardboard cutout of him so he could enjoy the trip and be in the photos! Thanks for stopping by.

 Bud Bryan's Build
A note from Bud: Yes, yes it's true, I am attempting to construct another roadster (maybe a few of you remember the original). I no longer bend in the middle like I use to, nor bounce up from the floor spritely, but it's going okay. That's Bud on the cover at the lower right. May 1969. CLICK above for the maiden voyage of Bud's build.
The build: Cornhuskers '32 Frame, Brookville '29 Roadster P.U. extended cab body, Small Block Chevy (Sorry, the flathead isn't done), early and late Ford goodies, an assist from Weedetr Street Rods, Colfax Tim Brown and others, and we'll be cruising the Interstate.
Bobbed at the rear `32 frame rails, Pete & Jake's front end and rear ladder bar set-up, 9" Ford rearend from John's Rearends, H.D. late Ford rear brakes, `47 Ford front binders on `40 spindles, Walker radiator, B&M trans-cooler, Gennie Shifter, home-made e-brake hook-up, small-block chevy & 350 Turbo transmission, & driveline. Special construction work by Tim Brown, Larry Murch & "JY". Runs like a top & goes straight. "Built to Boogey" Bobbed stock `29 bed, Brookville 6" stretched Roadster Pickup body, `34 3-window windshield by Tim Brown with custom windshield posts and some A-cowl alteration. Bud with a copy of the November, 1973 issue of Rod & Custom Magazine, The 'Chicken Coupe' issue. Bud was the Editor of Rod & Custom Magazine back in the day working along side publishing legends: Tom Medley, Gray Baskerville and Jim Jacobs. Bud is now a welcome member of the Sacramento Vintage Ford crew! |

HUNNERT Car Pile Up #9 Saturday, October 9th, 2010
The Hunnert Car Pileup is a car show for hot rodders who build their
cars, and drive them. The Pileup is about hanging out, meeting new
friends, and seeing old ones. It is about checking out the craftsmanship
in others' cars, and showing off your own. It is about great music,
art, and finding that rare part. It is a nod to a bygone era that lives
in each of us. It is about the drive there, the drive home, and the
story that goes in between.
2010 will mark the 9th Pileup, but their 1st show at Progress City in Decatur, Illinois. Its going to be a great one!
If you have never been to the Pileup, you should check the show's Entry Criteria to see if your car will pass inspection.
