Custom d'Elegance Award: Making History Again!

John Buck with Hot Rod Shows announced that the Custom d'Elegance Award has been resurrected for the 2010 Sacramento Autorama. The top Customs of the country will again be competing for this prestigious award.

Winner receives $3,000.00, Trophy, Leather Jacket and the winner's name on the Historic Perpetual Plaque.

History: In the early 1950's when car shows were getting a foothold in Northern California, there were two distinct styles, Hot Rods and Customs. Both groups competed for a variety of awards. In 1953 at the Oakland Roadster Show, the Car of Elegance Award was established. This would become the ultimate award for the custom car owner. Joe Bailon would be the first winner with his radical full-custom 1941 Chevy.

The following year the award was re-named the Custom Car d'Elegance Award. This prestigious award was given to the top Custom every year.  Cars owned by Hall of Famers Frank Livingston, Sonny Morris and Richard Zocchi are just a few of the winners.

Well known builders such as Bailon, Barris and Winfield were all involved in the construction of Custom d'Elegance winners. The award was discontinued in the 1970's as the Custom Car scene had faded.

The King of Kustoms Award

New Award This Year: The King of Kustoms
$1000 and the newly custom designed
King of Kustoms ring.

Open to all customs built from 1936 -1964 1964 that feature a silhouette change including Chopped, Channeled and/or Sectioned.

1935 - 1948 Vehicles outward appearance must be in the true spirit of a classic custom.(Judges will give consideration to the intent of the vehicle). Also included are commercial type vehicles. The winner of this award will be selected based on overall design, flow, quality and workmanship of body work and paint. The judges will also consider the use of color, design of the paint as well as the look of the interior. This award will be selected with the vehicle closed up so it best actuates the vehicles bodylines. The overall winner will be selected by a 3 person committee of show judges.

This award is for the Coolest of the Cool!

The Autorama Awards ceremony starts at 4:00pm
on Sunday.

The 2010 Custom d'Elegance will be crowned along with the newest King of Kustoms and many others. This event will be featured in magazines and on television specials.

Stroker McGurk Approved!

Sacramento Vintage has been supplying the very COOL 'Stroker' or 'Gatsby' style white driving caps since the 70's and we have been bugging Tom Medley for quite a few years as well. (CLICK on the image). Thanks Tom!  Look for a 'special edition' of this hat we are sending over to the 'KIDS' running the 2010 L.A. Roadster Show.

Article courtesy
Ro McGonegalc:
Tom Medley hadn't done a cartoon in Hot Rod for nearly 10 years. Although his work had been in the first issue in 1948 and had continued until the early '60s (he was then the advertising manager at Hot Rod), I knew him as the majordomo at Rod & Custom , whose offices were 3 feet from ours at Car Craft . Arguably, Medley is the first of the true hot rod cartoonists and remains the number one such of all time, best known for the creation of the supremely inventive and indefatigable Stroker McGurk, who was, in essence, the spirit of hot rodding and Hot Rod magazine.

Stroker's exploits were often impossible, always amusing, and his conviction and fortitude never wavered. In those days, the hobby of hot rodding was under constant surveillance by city fathers as well as law enforcement and was trying hard to overcome its outlaw and street-racing image. For hot rodding and drag racing to expand (and otherwise be profitable), it had to become respectable in the public eye. Editor Wally Parks fashioned Hot Rod magazine as a public blueprint for hot rodders as clean-cut and law-abiding, helpful to the community at large, and not unlike an adult chaperone at a high school hop.
Medley's Stroker character embodied that credo as envisioned by Parks.

Progeria Research Foundation

The mission of The Progeria Research Foundation is to find the cure and effective treatment for Progeria and its aging related disorders.

For six hours straight, auto designing legend Chip Foose (www.chipfoose.com) signed t-shirts for a cause near and dear to his heart: Chip's sister Amy had Progeria (see Amy's story). Appearing at the "Wheels and Waves" show, a classic car, hot rod and motorcycle show in Chip's hometown of Santa Barbara, California, Chip rolled up his sleeves to support PRF.

Thanks go out to Chip's mom Terry, and the other family and friends that came out to support PRF in Amy's memory. A special attraction at the show: "The Amy Car", built by Chip and his dad Sam Foose in 1986 as a memorial to Amy. Thanks to all who participated, especially The Wheels and Waves Foundation, Foose Design, and Year One Inc. (who held another event in Braselton, Georgia). With personal donations, a can collection, autographs, and proceeds from the shows, $4,000 was raised for PRF!
