The Monthly E-Newsletter of the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement
April 2009

Dear colleague,

Welcome to the April edition of the Grief Brief, the monthly e-newsletter of the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement (ACGB).

We have continued to update our dedicated Victorian Bushfire Information & Support web site with additional resources including audio recordings and notes from the Australian Psychological Society (APS) Bushfire Disaster Recovery Briefing which was held on March 3rd in Melbourne. To download these resources go to the APS site here or follow the links from our bushfire resources page.

The Australian Child & Adolescent Trauma, Loss & Grief Network, which aims to promote understanding of child and adolescent trauma, loss and grief has also added additional material on their site which addresses children affected by disasters. The network is supported by Australian Government funding under the COAG New Early Intervention Services for Parents, Children and Young People Measure and has a wealth of current and evidence based resource material. Visit the network site by following this link.

In the past month we have released four new podcasts from the 8th International Conference on Grief and Bereavement in Contemporary Society, held in Melbourne, Australia and hosted by ACGB in July 2008. These are the keynote presentation by Prof. George Bonanno on Resilience, recovery, and chronic grief: Mapping individual differences after loss and a presentation by Prof. Robert Neimeyer on Grief Therapy and the Reconstruction of Meaning. Accompanying these podcasts are the presentation notes or a supplementary journal article by the authors which are both automatically included as part of the podcast feed. To subscribe to these, and other presentations visit this link.

In this edition you will also find details on new publications; forthcoming lectures, courses and conferences; job vacancies at ACGB; details of a new theatre production and information on the benefits of ACGB membership.

New Publications

Danai cover Danai Papadatou, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Athens. Her clinical experience, research interests and publications focus mostly on issues related to pediatric palliative care, bereavement support, and health care providers' responses to the death of their patients. Her work is known internationally through her publications, presentations at scientific meetings, and active involvement in international work groups and societies.

Dr. Papadatou is also the founder and president of a Greek non profit organization ("Merimna") which provides services to children and families who are coping with illness and death experiences, offers training to professionals who support seriously ill and bereaved children and adolescents, organizes psychosocial interventions in disaster situations, and sensitizes the Greek public on issues related to death and dying.

Her most recent publication In the Face of Death: Professionals Who Care for the Dying and the Bereaved, was released April 2009. This 320-page hardback text explores the experiences of professionals who care for seriously ill, dying, or bereaved children, adolescents, or adults, and offers a solid framework within which their responses can be addressed, understood, and transformed. The author discusses the essential issues related to health care providers' experiences of death and grieving, including the inevitability of suffering, the potential for growth, suffering in the workplace, team functioning in death situations, and team resilience.

The book focuses on three main themes:

The "Caring Relationship" presents an interpersonal perspective, and focuses on the relationship between the person who is dying or grieving and the care provider; a new relationship-based model of care is proposed
The "Care Provider in Death Situations" adopts an intrapsychic approach and addresses personal responses to death; based on research findings a model on the grieving process of health professionals is presented and its seven basic propositions are analyzed
The "Team in the Face of Death" adopts a systemic perspective and focuses on the organizational context within which care services are offered; recommendations for effective interdisciplinary services are presented that benefit the dying, bereaved people, and the health care provider.

Further details on this new release can be found here.
