Partnerships important to schools

School districts use tax dollars to pay teachers, operate schools, provide buses, buy textbooks and do numerous other things that go into educating children. But there is so much more that could be done if resources were available. That is why partnerships are so important.

We partner with organizations, agencies and companies for many things. Partners do everything from providing tutors to making donations and paying for incentives for students.

Students, faculty and staff at Center Street Middle School will feel the power of partnership Wednesday, Sept. 19, when 200 employee volunteers from BBVA Compass converge on the school. Center Street will be the focus of a Team. Works. in Schools revitalization project through a partnership between BBVA Compass and the National Basketball Association's NBA Cares.

The project includes painting, murals, landscaping, creation of a computer lab, cyber cafe and reading nook, refurbishing the teachers' lounge and workroom and turning the center courtyard into an outdoor learning space.

This is one example, although a stellar one, of how partners can transform a school's environment. We cannot thank all the volunteers who work with our schools and students enough for all the good things they do.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Superintendent
Birmingham City Schools
