Registration is important

School starts Aug 20, but something important is happening in schools next week. Summer registration is Aug, 6 to Aug. 10 for all 50 schools in the Birmingham City School System.

We need all parents and guardians to go to their children's schools and complete the forms that will mean students are officially enrolled for the 2012-2013 school year.

I am happy to be able to tell parents that the registration form is available on the district website. Parents can fill out the form on line and submit it.

Those who submit the form on line will have less paperwork to fill out when they go to their child's school. We are working on getting all the necessary paperwork on line but do not have all the forms available yet. We hope to complete that process in the near future.

Click here to fill out the form.

Registration is important because schools need to be prepared for the students who will arrive for classes Aug. 20. They need to place students in classes and prepare schedules for those who are in the sixth through 12th grades.

Registration hours will be from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for elementary, middle and K-8 schools. Hours at high schools will be 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Superintendent
Birmingham City Schools

Oliver gets outdoor classroom
Volunteers, companies build facility

When students return to Oliver Elementary School this month, they will find a new outdoor classroom to help them explore the environment. The work was done recently by business and community partners and volunteers.

The partners include Chuck Kelly from Kelly Landscape Architects LLC,Clay Bailey from Rast Construction Inc. and  Rev. Jason Cooke of the Highlands Dream Center.

"Oliver students will be provided an opportunity to experience natural and human-created characteristics of the environment in a natural setting. Outside the school building exists a blooming world of 'natural studies' with all types of structures than can do a better job of teaching than videos and computers as children often best learn by doing," said Principal Allen Lewis.

Parent Involvement survey is open
