Tests reflect student learning

All year, we have been focused on quality teaching and learning processes. We focus on what is it we need our students to know, how do we know they have learned it and what do we do if they have learned it or if they did not. This is the Professional Learning Communities or PLC process.

Beginning next week, we will administer the Alabama Reading and Math Test (ARMT) assessments that give students an opportunity to demonstrate their learning during the course of the year. This will occur in all elementary and middle schools across the state.

I thank all of our teachers for their hard work ensuring that students are learning all throughout the year. In addition, I appreciate the effort put forth by our students.

We ask that parents make sure their children get a good night's rest, eat a good breakfast and arrive at school on time the days they will be tested. We want all of our students to do their best to show what they have learned. All of these efforts are beneficial in the learning process.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Superintendent
Birmingham City Schools

Kindergarten registration begins April 9
Parents should register children at zoned schools

Parents of children who will be in kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year should register them this month. Kindergarten registration begins at all elementary and K-8 schools Monday, April 9, and continues through Friday, April 27. Schools will be closed April 20 and 23.

Children must turn 5 by Sept. 2 in order to be eligible for kindergarten.

Parents should bring the child's birth certificate, social security card and blue immunization form. Proof of residence -- a lease or deed and two current utility bills -- and a photo ID of the parent or legal guardian also are required.

Carver students tour six colleges
Trip included schools in Alabama, Tennessee

Two days, 41 students, seven adults, six colleges and universities, two states and very little sleep added up to a very rewarding and exciting time for Carver High students who went on the school's annual college

Carver students visit Alabama A&M University

tour March 29 and 30. Principal Darrell Hudson and faculty members hope the trip changed their lives as well.

The adults understand that exposure breeds hope and create excitement about the future. The student had an opportunity to visit and communicate with students and admissions personnel at Vanderbilt, Fisk, Tennessee State, the Art Institute of Tennessee, The University of Alabama-Huntsville and Alabama A& M University.

The faculty hopes that, now that students have seen college campuses, they will pursue a college education with more vigor. They have had a good success rate with the number of students deciding to go to college after being a part of the college tour, including at-risk students who came back to school with a new desire to succeed and get into college.

Two seniors on this year's tour were accepted into college while they were visiting schools. Shearer Allen was accepted to Tennessee State and offered a spot in the band after an audition during the tour. Alexander Chenier was accepted at Alabama A & M University.
