Tax would expand programs

Envision the Birmingham City Schools with International Baccalaureate programs at several schools across the city, the expansion of preschool classrooms or the creation of preschool centers, additional foreign languages classes in our middle and high schools and the expansion of fine arts programs in all schools.

That is not the reality now because the district needs additional funding to offer those opportunities to all of our students. We could accomplish those goals if we had the $9 million a year a 3-mill property tax increase would provide. The increase would cost the owner of a house valued at $50,000 just $15 a year.

Because our boys and girls deserve the best, I have made the first step in seeking a property tax increase by asking the Birmingham City Council to consider placing this item on the same ballot as a proposed $75 million city bond referendum.

At this point, I ask our stakeholders to think about what those additional programs would mean to the children of Birmingham. Our children are our most precious asset, and we need to do our best to provide them with the best education we can give them.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Superintendent
Birmingham City Schools

Wenonah team best rookie in regional robotics competition
Wenobots now no longer considered rookies

The Wenobots were recognized at the March 27 Birmingham Board of Education meeting

It was a big honor for the Wenobots, Wenonah High School's robotics team, to be the first team from Birmingham to compete in the regional First Robotics contest. Then the Wenobots, who were rookies in the competition, beat out seven other rookie teams to win the rookie division.

Sixteen students, team facilitator Ruqayyah Aqeel, science department head Clifford Johnson, AP English teacher Christina Hall and counselor Erie Morrow went to Kenner, La., for the March 15-17 event.

The team members are Cameron Trice, Kelvin Mathews, Kiarra Scott, Timotheus Miller, Reginald Bester, LaDarrius Ravizee, Ric Frye, Jamila Mims, Kiana Kimber, Calvin Skinner, Ebone Farmer, Gabriel McCandless, Andre Logan, Kimmel Lowe, Aliyah Walker, Ciera McCain, Jonah Thomas and Jada Johnson.

After their impressive showing, the Wenobots are no longer considered rookies.
