 | | Celebrating Black History Month

Many of our schools have conducted programs this month that celebrated individuals who have contributed to the great fabric of our community at the local, state, national and world levels.
School programs included musical tributes, re-enactments, presentations and many other student-created activities and projects. The activities make us realize that our students indeed understand their environment and their ability to contribute and make a difference.

Our responsibility is to support and nurture them along the way. On behalf of our students, we thank you, our stakeholders, for celebrating Black History Month with us. We also appreciate your involvement at other events and activities throughout the entire school year.
  Sincerely,

 Craig Witherspoon SuperintendentBirmingham City Schools

 | Carver student's work part of downtown mural   Disability doesn't stop Tresha Waters When people walk or drive by the Brown-Marx Tower at 20th Street and First Avenue North, they may notice a mural covering a wooden construction barrier. What they may not know is that one part of the mural is a self-portait of Tresha Waters, a sophomore at Carver High School.
Tresha is one of seven Space One Eleven participants whose work is part of the mural. But she's special in other ways. Profoundly deaf since birth, Tresha wears hearing aids but communicates through sign language. She has a sign language interpreter and attends speech therapy language sessions.
Tresha's mom, Wanda Waters, is proud of her daughter's artistic ability and has made sure she is able to participate in the Space One Eleven after-school program for high school students. Tresha's work also has been on display at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and a Charity League event. |
