Greetings!

As the 2012 Hurricane Season begins, we at Caple Howden Insurance Agency want to ensure our customers' storm readiness plan is in place.

As a reminder, please note that your homeowner policy does not cover flood. To be protected against this peril, you must purchase a separate flood insurance policy. Call us for a quote today.

Also, be aware that your homeowner  policy has a separate hurricane deductible which is expressed as a percentage of the amount of coverage on your house, normally 2%. So in the case of a $200,000 home the deductible would be $4000 dollars.

If you have any questions as to how your coverage will respond in a hurricane, please call us for a quick review.

Sincerely,

REMEMBERING ANDREW
 August 16-28, 1992

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew's landfall in Miami-Dade county; Andrew, a small yet fierce storm, wrought over 25 billion dollars of damage--making it the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. history. The storm also claimed 26 lives directly and it is thought a total of 65 lives were lost due to the direct or indirect effects of Andrew. Rainfall pummeled Southern states such as Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi in excess of 7 inches.

Are You Prepared?
UMBAs we begin the 2012 hurricane season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a "near normal 2012 Atlantic hurricane season."

In it's preseason outlook, NOAA "says there's a 70 percent chance of nine to 15 named storms (with top winds of 39 mph or higher), of which four to eight will strengthen to a hurricane (with top winds of 74 mph or higher) and of those one to three will become major hurricanes (with top winds of 111 mph or higher, ranking Category 3, 4 or 5). Based on the period 1981-2010, an average season produces 12 named storms with six hurricanes, including three major hurricanes."

It must be noted, the NOAA does not forecast which storms make landfall, so a less active hurricane season does not mean you can be less active in your hurricane readiness.

Tips to Get You Started:

  1. Determine safe evacuation routes
  2. Buy non-perishable food and drinking water
  3. Fuel and service family vehicles
  4. Ensure that you have extra cash on hand
  5. Check flashlight and radio batteries

Storm Surge

Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from hurricanes. In the past, a great portion of the death toll has been the result of the rise of the ocean as a result of a hurricane landfall.

If you are living in a coastal area, it is important to heed the advisory warnings and evacuate endangered areas.
What to Do if Caught in a Flood?

1. Avoid flood waters
2. Avoid moving water
3. Use caution even after floodwaters recede
4. Stay away from powerlines
5. Stay away from home until cleared by authorities
6. Clean/disinfect everything touched by water
7. Stay away from buildings surrounded by water
Remember,

Even if the  hurricane is not packing large mph winds, it can still cause damage. A storm with a low wind rating can be very deadly if it is large and slow-moving.

Be safe.
