CONNECT's College Readiness Work Continues

In partnership with the Southeastern Massachusetts Readiness Center (SEMARC), CONNECT has awarded mini-grants to five of its member campuses to "Continue the Collegial Conversations" started at the April 2011 College Readiness Conference. High school and higher education faculty will meet to discusCharlie Walls the disconnect between secondary and post-secondary education, and work to build bridges so that more southeastern MA high school graduates enter college prepared for success.

Dr. Charles Wall, president of Massasoit Community College and chair of CONNECT, points to the lack of alignment between high school and college expectations that leads too many students to place into remedial courses. Dr. Wall continues: "That is why we are having this conversation, with both K-12 and postsecondary educators at the table."

Anna BradfieldDr. Anna Bradfield, dean of the College of Education and Allied Studies at Bridgewater State University and co-director of the SE MA Readiness Center, commented on the project set in motion at the 2011 College Readiness Conference. "The closing sessions, where K-12 teachers and their peers in college Writing and Math started talking, were just buzzing with energy. People wanted to work on solving this problem, so that students wouldn't enter college already behind."

Cape Cod Community College, one of the participating campuses, will be working with K-12 partners Dennis-Yarmouth, Barnstable, Cape Cod Tech, and Upper Cape Tech. Notes Susan Miller, vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, "The Cape Cod Community College is pleased to receive SE MA Readiness Center funds so we can join our secondary education colleagues in defining 'college readiness' and learning about PARCC" (the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, a new national K-12 assessment of student learning in which Massachusetts is taking a leadership role).

The remaining college/university and school district teams are: Bridgewater State University partnering with Taunton, Bridgewater-Raynham, Whitman-Hanson, and Plymouth; Bristol Community College working with Fall River and New Bedford; Massasoit Community College joining with Brockton and Randolph; and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in collaboration with Dartmouth, Wareham, and New Bedford. The first K-12/higher education meetings will take place March 8 and 9, 2012.

Funding for the project is coming through the SE MA Readiness Center from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Education and federal Race to the Top funds. To learn more about the 2011 conference and CONNECT's college readiness work, please visit the CONNECT website.
