Massasoit Moves Ahead with Marine Campus in Scituate

On January 19, 2012, Lt. Governor Timothy Murray announced a $100,000 grant for the Marine and Environmental Education Alliance, a non-profit group seeking to build a marine and environmental community college in Scituate. The Massachusetts Technical Collaborative agency gCharlie Wallrant will fund a study of curriculum and training needs. The vision is to build an "Ocean Campus Center" that would serve up to1,500 students per week with programs in fields such as boat building, alternative energy, fisheries, and water treatment. Massasoit Community College has been the lead higher education partner in the project; however, the proposed college would draw upon the marine and environmental programs of CONNECT schools such as UMASS Dartmouth and Mass Maritime Academy as well. President Charles Wall described Massasoit's role as the "educational broker to bring other partners in, both public and private, so we can really focus on what the region needs economically." The group is awaiting a decision from Scituate officials on the allocation of 3.5 acres of land on the Driftway. Read more here.
