Save the Date: CONNECT Sustainability Conference - December 2, 2011 

 

Faculty and staff from the CONNECT campuses, led by Sustainability Faculty Fellow Ann-Marie Burke of Massasoit Community College, have been busy planning a day-long discussion of pedagogy and the greening of higher education. Entitled "Sustainability and Engaged Student Learning," the conference will bring faculty together to exchange information about best practices they have developed, to  brainstorm solutions to problems they have encountered, and to learn more about integrating sustainability into the curriculum. The keynote address will be given by Debra Rowe, Ph.D., president of the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development and professor of energy management, renewable energy technology and psychology at Oakland Community College. The conference will take place at UMass Dartmouth's ATMC facility in Fall River.

 

Registration will OPEN on November 1. Conference organizers are currently seeking CONNECT educators interested in facilitating panels and sharing their experiences in three areas: Incorporating Sustainability into the Curriculum--Approaches for Educators at All Levels; Sustainability Efforts Going Beyond the Classroom; and Best Practices in the Disciplines. UMASS Dartmouth Launches Initiative to Promote Advanced Manufacturing in SE MA

 

A new consortium met for the first time on Tuesday, October 4, at UMASS Dartmouth's Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center. Convened by Michael Goodman, chair of UMD's Department of Public Policy, and consultant Greg Sheldon, with seed funding provided by Chancellor Jean MacCormack, the group included representatives from Bristol Community College and the other CONNECT institutions, regional workforce boards, and founding corporate members such as Five Star Manufacturing, Lockheed Martin Sippican, Aerovox (a medical and industrial device maker), and Precix (which makes seals for the aerospace, automotive and chemical processing industries). Leaders hope to grow the core group of around 15 companies to 100 or more during the next four years. The consortium grew from a series of meetings held by the state after Gov. Deval Patrick talked about the importance of advanced manufacturing to the state's economy. Click here to read the full story.

 

BCC President is Area Veteran of the Year President Sbrega

 

Dr. John J. Sbrega, president of Bristol Community College, has been named the 2011 Southeastern Massachusetts Veteran of the Year. President Sbrega, who was a captain in the Air Force, is the 16th person to receive the award bestowed by the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Massachusetts Veterans Housing Program Inc. He served as a C-130 pilot from 1965-68 in Southeast Asia and flew 1,848 missions in South Vietnam. He is a decorated veteran, who has earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal (with 17 oak leaf clusters), Vietnam Service Campaign Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Expeditionary Medal (awarded for service in the Dominican Republic). As president of BCC, Dr. Sbrega has embraced the need for affordable access to education for all groups, and has taken a particular interest in veterans. Cape Cod Community College Fall Presidential Lecture: "Great Whales and Historic Shipwrecks of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary"

October 26, 2011, 7:00 p.m.

 

The Fall Presidential Lecture 2011 will be presented by Craig McDonald, Ph.D., superintendent of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Almost the size of the State of Rhode Island, the Sanctuary, located at the entrance of Massachusetts Bay between Gloucester and Provincetown, is the seasonal home to endangered humpback and right whales and provides the final resting place for hundreds of historic shipwrecks. Massachusetts Maritime Academy - Women on the Water Annual Conference 2011

October 27 - 29, 2011

 

Maritime Academy cadets, representatives, and alumni, maritime associations, ship operators, owners, and managers, seafarer & trade union representatives, maritime lawyers, and maritime industry representatives are invited to the fifth annual Women on the Water (WOW) Conference, hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), in partnership with the Maritime Administration (MARAD). The Conference will bring together cadets from the Federal and State Merchant Marine Academies with professional women and men who are leaders in different sectors of the maritime industry, providing an excellent opportunity to learn about career opportunities and current issues affecting the maritime industry. Bristol Community College - Celebrate BCC Attleboro

It is one of the great Attleboro success stories -an empty old industry space turned into a modern, bright, state-of-the-art educational facility.  The Attleboro Center has grown from less than 300 students in borrowed quarters at an old school on County Street into the new facility on Field Road enrolling more than 1,000 students days and evenings.
