August 11, 2011  News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Governor Mitch Daniels and Mayor Greg Ballard joined leaders from Ascension Health today at a blessing ceremony and ribbon-cutting event to formally mark the opening of the national healthcare system's new service center at 4040 Vincennes Circle in Indianapolis.

"Ascension Health's selection of Indianapolis for this new facility, after a rigorous, multi-state competition, was another bit of proof that our state is among the nation's very best places to do business," said Governor Mitch Daniels. "Ascension Health's continued expansion adds to Indiana's growing reputation as a leader in both healthcare innovation and excellence."

St. Louis-based Ascension Health (www.ascensionhealth.org) is the nation's largest Catholic and largest nonprofit healthcare system, and its $10.9 million Ascension Health Ministry Service Center opened in late-June. Approximately 120 of what ultimately will be 500 Ministry Service Center associates now work at the facility. By the end of 2014, the center will offer a variety of services in human resources, supply chain, finance and accounting to support Ascension Health's 78 acute care hospitals and more than 1,200 related healthcare facilities in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

At today's event, a representative of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis led a blessing of the new workspace and leaders participated in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. Following these activities, guests toured the state-of-the-art center.

With 113,000 associates around the country, Ascension Health already has a significant presence in Indiana and is a major employer. St.Vincent Health, a 20-hospital system in Indiana that has more than 15,000 associates and 2,500 physicians, is a part of Ascension Health. TriMedx, an Ascension Health subsidiary and healthcare equipment services company, also is headquartered in Indianapolis. In Evansville, St. Mary's Health System is a member of Ascension Health that employs 4,012, and the national system also operates an information services facility in that city.

"Our commitment to serving our communities with special emphasis on those who are poor and vulnerable is foundational to Ascension Health and its Health Ministries," said Ascension Health's President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony R. Tersigni, Ed.D., FACHE. "To demonstrate this commitment, last year Ascension Health and its Health Ministries provided $1.3 billion in care of persons who are poor and community benefit. The work that is being undertaken in this Ministry Service Center will help us devote even more resources to achieving our Mission in each of the communities where we are privileged to serve."

"Bringing our capabilities together in one place to serve the national health ministry in vital support areas like finance, human resources, and supply chain is allowing us to develop new capacity and expertise, lower healthcare costs and improve our ability to serve overall," said Robert J. Henkel, Ascension Health's President, Healthcare Operations and Chief Operating Officer. "This service center is vital to our ongoing efforts."

"This is a significant moment for Ascension Health and its Health Ministries," said Lee Coulter, Senior Vice President and CEO of the Ascension Health Ministry Service Center. "We are proud to be a part of the Indianapolis community serving our national health ministry. Delivering service is what we do, and now that we've begun to do that work it's very exciting."

"We are excited to welcome Ascension Health's new professional service center and its 500 new jobs to Indianapolis. We are fortunate Indianapolis was chosen over a number of options as the location for this important business operation and we look forward to a strong partnership with them as they make our city their home," said Mayor Greg Ballard.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Ascension Health up to $5 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $90,000 in training grants based on the organization's job creation plans. Develop Indy and the City of Indianapolis offered Ascension Health infrastructure support and a training grant worth up to $300,000. Develop Indy will also support property tax abatement for Ascension Health before the Metropolitan Development Commission. Indy Partnership served as a project liaison, providing research and site selection support.
