Veera Yopga Center

Creating a community around Truth, Love & Compassion through the practice & teachings of Yoga

JULY/AUGUST 2011

Note from VEERA's Founder

There's a saying "Be careful what you wish for".  For the longest time, I always thought this saying was silly as there were things that I wished for so badly.  I kept 'putting it out there', yet nothing happened.  It seems that way sometimes, doesn't it?

I've lately realized that when it does, it's the universe, higher power, whatever you wanna call it, at work.  You see, many of the things that I've so badly wanted require a level of maturity, a level of readiness that I didn't necessarily have when the desire began.  As I continued to put it out there however, it was cooking.  My faith was the fire and within the elements of growth were the ingredients to this unbelievably delicious meal.  Now, all of a sudden, it seems that there is no stopping what is coming.

I'm totally humbled by this process and by how much we are all taken care of.  Be careful what you wish for?  Maybe, but I really do believe that our desires meshed with the role of that 'higher power' create the perfect balance in our lives individually and in nature as a whole.

Namaste.

LEARN TO MEDITATE!

G in med

Have you ever wondered if there is an actual technique to meditating?  While meditation may seem like a simple concept, it can be quite challenging to sit still for a determined amount of time. The benefits of meditation are profound and a sustained practice does wonders for your nervous system, your ability to handle stress, your levels of awareness, and your connection to the divine and the world around you. In this workshop we'll explore a few different methods of meditation. We'll go over why it's so hard to define, yet so powerful to engage in. This workshop will be lead by Summer Ward, our very own meditation leader. She'll offer tools to explore in your own personal practice. Later that evening, feel free to bring the tools you learned and try them out during our free monthly meditation gathering from 8 to 9pm.

VEERA YOGA'S 100 HOUR

TEACHER TRAINING

teacher training 'Teach Through Grace'

Begins September 9th!

"I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and Non-violence are as old as the hills. All I have done is to try experiments in both on as vast a scale as I could." - Mahatma Gandhi

Through experiment, experience, and faith, Gandhi changed the world. He spoke his truth without hesitation, loved without judgment, and inspired people across the globe. Can we as yoga teachers do this? ABSOLUTELY!   The truth, love and compassion that overflowed from Gandhi's heart is within all of us, sometimes we just have to clear away some dust and maybe even a few cobwebs. This teacher training journey will support you to do just that. You'll start to see what's standing in your way. Through this process, you'll begin to understand your truth and find an abundance of love to share!

KARUNA CORNER

Karuna means compassion in sanskrit and this section of our newsletter is dedicated to compassionate acts in and around our community.

katelin and jake

Hi, my name is Katelin. You may have seen me around the studio before. I would like to share with you a topic that is very close to my heart. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a meaningful disease to me because one of my close friends, Jake, has been forced to live with it all of his life. I can only imagine what he has to go through each and every day, so am trying to do all that I can to help cure this affliction. CF is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. Coming in October is the CF Cycle For Life bike tour, which is a fundraiser held annually in order to support finding a cure to CF. The event is October 22, 2011, and features two distance options through some of the most scenic terrains in the Sierra Foothill Wine Country. You can help by joining this race for a cure. Find out more at

http://www.cff.org/Chapters/sacramento/. If bike rides just aren't your thing, but you still want to help, you can donate to Jake's "Team Jammin' for Jake" under the captain's name, Rick Rock. You can always contact me for more information. Thank you so much, and every little bit can help save lives.

TWISTING OPEN AND SINKING IN ~ by Tasia

Twisting Open Sinking InHello Fellow Yogis!
We've heard this many times: what we practice on the mat translates to our "everyday life." But so many sensations and ideas can well up (and sometimes hit us on the head like a two-by-four), that we may not get the chance to really reflect and talk about how these experiences, challenges and changes manifest themselves in our lives. In response to this, we've started a blog, Twisting Open, Sinking In, to provide our community (and anyone else!), with the opportunity to ponder, understand, chuckle, or even give a little "huh, that's interesting!"

The posts I will be writing are in part an expression of my journey as I continue to deepen and twist open along with the rest of you. Not just on the mat, but in our day to day lives when we're not attempting Dancers Pose in the studio or in our living rooms, physically wobbling and finding strength. We wobble and find our strength in each moment we breathe, and part of the beauty of a community like this one is that we continue to inspire and support each other.

At the beginning of each month a new post will be added. As the conversation grows, you can comment on the postings themselves or even share on our facebook page. Let's explore the practice of Everyday Life!

Namaste,
Tasia

Meet Sevak Jessie!

Jessie

My story with Yoga started off a little rocky. I've always been a little different and wild, but in a good way.  I'm full of surprises.  In 2007 however, my life took a slight turn.  A turn that was completely unexpected. In Sept 2007 I was diagnosed with stage four-breast cancer at age 24. From that day on, my life was turned upside down. The doctor's office was a new home for me. An MRI and a CT Scan were routine. I went through years of treatment, four major surgeries, and doctors, doctors, doctors. It took a mental and a huge physical toll on me. I was drained. My heart was torn and my mind was a battle scene from a war movie. My doctor had suggested yoga for physical therapy. I had dabbled with yoga years before my cancer, but it was nothing serious. I found a local studio around the corner from my house in Folsom. It was challenging, but something spoke to me. I left that class feeling great. My body felt alive and I was hooked. I kept at it and after a while I was able to keep up with the class on a physical level. Then another change started to surface. I had been protecting myself for so long, yet bit-by-bit, breath-by-breath I was breaking down walls I had built to protect myself. I was in so much fear, emotional pain and judgment of myself. Yoga has shown me more then the physical aspect. Of course my physical health is important but It's given my mind, my body and my soul a release. I have had a rocky past and who knows what tomorrow will bring. But when I connect with my breath and start moving the energy inside I'm letting go of the old and opening my heart to new possibilities. This practice has forever changed my life and the way I look at it. I'm filled with excitement and joy for this new journey and most of all to give back what has been so freely given to me.
