Veera Yopga Center

Creating a community around Truth, Love & Compassion through the practice & teachings of Yoga

MAY 2011

Note from VEERA's Founder

As a teacher of yoga I am first a student, and as such, am going through yoga teacher training.  Participating in this program was a calling I felt from within.  It was something I really needed for me and at the same time, had no idea how it would happen with all the responsibilities, time constraints, blah, blah, blah.  I surrendered, let go (a little), and took the leap.  On the first night of training, I was amazed at our first lesson:  receive love!  You can't give it, if you don't receive it!  Ok, so this isn't ground breaking information, but it was exactly what I needed to hear.  Over the last few weeks of training, I've taken this to heart and started to soften my approach towards myself.   I'm feeling the love that I so want to give to others, and it's been WONDERFUL!  I feel alive, I feel real, and I feel like I have so much to give!

It's crazy that many of us work hard to control and command our way through things, yet as soon as we surrender a little, we don't have to try so hard.  What's needed comes almost effortlessly and all is well.  Yoga Master, Shri K Patthabi Jois says 'Do your practice, and all is coming.'

I love this practice!

See you on the mat.

Namaste.

KARUNA CORNER

Karuna means compassion in sanskrit. This area of our newsletter is dedicated to compassionate acts within our community.

Compassion is something that we can participate in daily!  When you walk down the street today (and every other day), smile geniunly at everyone you see, even when they don't seem to want to make eye contact.  It's pretty amazing the difference we can make in someone's day by this small act of kindness.  Most of us are looking for love and kindness.  Give it away and feel the compassion come right back at you!

THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO KNOW

Did you know that strawberries are listed as #7 on the Organic Dirty Dozen list? That is, the list of top 12 fruits and vegetables that you should buy organic. With their thin, permeable skin, strawberries contain pesticides even after washing. Did you also know that these beautiful little red California berries are at the center of a big ugly controversy? The pesticide used in farming strawberries, Methyl Bromide, is being phased out, because it depletes the planet's ozone layer. The replacement is the chemical Methyl Iodide. This chemical has been deemed toxic and carcinogenic, but is now licensed in 47 states, most recently in California, and has been determined "safe" for the use on strawberries.  One UCSF professional who was part of the scientific committee to review Methyl Iodide said that exposure to this chemical will definitely cause cancer. How can use of this pesticide be considered "safe" for the consumers, farm workers, wildlife, and environment? Food for thought and one more good reason to grow your own or buy organic.

Meet Sevak Emily!

 Emily

I was born restless, always looking for a place to really call home. This lead me from the East Tennessee hills, where I was born and raised, to different parts of the US as I pursued an education and career in classical music. Though I loved the music and community, I eventually realized that life as a struggling musician was not for me. Feeling restless (and out-of-shape), I found myself in Sacramento on the mat again, years after some awkward first impressions and forgettable instances of flirting with yoga. Yoga  woke me up, welcomed me home, and unleashed a creative force and joyful love of life that was dormant in my heart. I stopped taking myself so seriously and started to laugh a lot - something the me of three years ago did not do very often. The more I go to the mat, the more my shyness and insecurities fade away. I became a teacher to create a space for others to receive the gifts of this amazing practice. It is so important to give ourselves space to explore the amazing freedom and beauty we all have in our hearts - home is truly where our heart is.

I am still in love with music. Rather than performing, I work on the other side of the arts business at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts where I manage the audience services department and the artist liaison program. I also love traveling, walking my dog through midtown with my awesome husband, reading, writing (you can read my writing at http://yaynamaste.com), and just living this blessed life one moment at a time. I am so grateful to be part of the beautiful community we have at Veera and look forward to seeing you soon!
