APRIL 2011

Note from VEERA's Founder

Spring fever has hit and it's becoming easier to let work go by the wayside in exchange for an afternoon on the patio with a favorite book.  Change is in the air as the flowers bloom, the days get longer and the sun shines brighter.  The environment is supporting letting go!  The teachings of yoga tell us that in order to grow, we must let go of control to allow things to unfold as they need to.  So it seems to me that we not only need to let go, but then we need to hold on as we allow time and space for everything to fall into place.  This time and space can be a bit disconcerting as it requires living in complete faith or as some would say, living in the unknown.  It is here where growth happens . . . what do we bring to this space?  An attitude that is open to endless possibilities or an ego that fears what will happen when we are not in control.  With the right frame of mind, this empty space can be quite freeing as it is a time when we are not bound by the restrictions of the known.  This space forces us to be present, it forces us to let go and hold on.

Namaste.

THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO KNOW

I  was shocked to learn that even companies like Burt's Bees, The Body Shop and Tom's of Maine test their products on animals! This message is not to promote hatred, only awareness.  As yogis, we cannot afford to stay in the dark!  We can make a difference.  If our wants (the demand) changes, companies will have to change their practices.  The future of our children, our community and our world is truely in our hands.  Through this earth, we are all connected.

meditation

May 1st|6:45pm|FREE

As a part of World Meditation Day we are offering a free meditation class on the first Sunday of every month from 6:45-8pm.  Research has shown that on a personal level, meditation has a whole host of health benefits including stress, blood pressure and cholesterol reduction and increases in memory, creativity, focus, productivity and strengthens Self-actualization.  On a grander scale, meditation alters the quantum feild around us influencing our relationships, nature, and the world.  It's even been proven to reduce violent crime rates in areas where people have come together for this purpose.  We'll be joining people from around the world during this time to not only improve ourselves but spread positive energy, compassion, and love to all!  The first 15 minutes of class will be for set-up and discussion followed by an hour of silent meditation.  If you have a personal prop or cushion please bring it with you.  All levels are welcome!"

Meet Sevak Kelly!

 kelly

I've always known there was something more, a better way of living my life. But, until the last couple of years, I was afraid to go against the grain, afraid to be different than my friends. We spent our time working, waiting to get to the weekend. Then we'd blow off steam, just to start all over again the next week. I was unhappy, and unhealthy, but was surrendered to thinking that that was just what my life looked like.

I flirted with yoga on and off over the years, always feeling amazing and inspired afterward. There was a tug of war inside of me... conform (be miserable and accepted) or follow my heart and change my life (step outside my comfort zone, separate from the norm and risk rejection).

Well, as you may have guessed, I took the leap. I fell madly, passionately in love with yoga. The more I practiced yoga, both on the mat and out in the world, the more abundance in every form poured into my life. I found myself surrounded by positive, likeminded people, opportunities fell into my lap to further better my life, I am healthy inside and out, and completely happy and grateful for the first time in my life. My life has transformed in every way possible and I can say with confidence that I'm living the dream.

The practice of yoga is, for me, a practice of showing up present, willing, and grateful in life. The beauty of yoga is that it meets each of us, exactly we are, with whatever lessons we need at that precise moment. Yoga teaches us assessable tools to heal old wounds, open our hearts and embrace life fully. Yoga has the power to changes lives. This is why I love yoga. This is why I teach.
