MARCH 2011

Donation Class for Japan: Saturday, April 2nd at 10am

Note from VEERA's Founder

Over the last few months, I've been hearing myself say 'I'm tired' so many times.  It's made me think about where it's coming from.  Yes, I have a new business, a 19 month old son, a family, etc.,  but really? . . . I'm living my dream!  Where is all of this fatigue coming from?  Well, when I look through the eyes of yoga, I believe it's my own resistance to what is.  I'm trying so hard to make things exactly as I want them to be rather than just going with the flow and allowing things to be and grow as they are.  While goal setting is good (some might even say imperative with a business), it puts us in a position of wanting to manipulate the current circumstances into something that we want, rather than being open to what could be waiting for us.  Resisting anything  is hard, it's intense and it's exhausting!!  We are all busy, we all have a lot on our plates; why is it that some handle it with such ease and some don't?  Could the answer lie in the flexibility of a person's expectations, or maybe even in their non-expectations?    My practice over the next few weeks is finding that suppleness to let things go and unfold as they will.  Does that mean I'm going to sit back and eat bon bon's?  No, it just means I'm going to do what I do and try to let go of expectations.   Does this sound familiar?  It sounds to me like presence. . .

Kid's Yoga!

 Kids yoga

Children are natural yogis!!

At VEERA, we create a safe, open and loving space for your children to discover and explore their minds and bodies.  These little people tend to think and learn differently than we do as adults.  That's why we encourage kids to be kids and work within the context of play and fun, to teach your child yoga postures.  Don't be surprised if after a few sessions, your child also begins to demonstrate inner strength, confidence, gratitude, and love and respect for themselves and others.

The Rocket!

Larry Schultz created the Rocket routine, a series of postures based on a modification of the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga primary and intermediate series.  The perfect marriage of tempo and sequence, these advanced routines are appropriate for all levels of students.  With plenty of ways to modify the classical poses, the benefits of the poses are transmitted equally to renew vitality and energy.  This vibrant routine is called the "Rocket" because, "it gets you there faster."  The Rocket is designed to wake up the nervous system and feed it the precious prana it craves while promoting a spirit.

Larry was planning to come to VEERA during the last weekend of April to bring the Rocket to all of us.  In the last few weeks however, Larry passed away.  His wife and senior student, Marie Schultz will be coming to deliver this workshop.  Come and learn from the one Larry inspired the most!

It's Hanuman's Birthday!

VEERA literally means strength, however the intention with which our beloved studio was named was after Hanuman who is also called Maha Veera.  Hanuman embodies strength and humility, power and devotion- he is the epitome of Yoga and that's why we love him!  Hanuman is also a huge fan of the performing arts.  So as an offering to him, we'll have a few traditional Indian dances and maybe even a few dances from the western world.

Sevak means servant in Sanskrit.  We call our staff our Sevak Team as we are here to serve and ensure that you get the most out of your VEERA experience.

Meet Sevak Christine!

For so many years, I focused on trying to change, fix, and do things that I thought would bring me happiness.  This attitude brought me many successes in my work and athletics.  I was happy enough and had a good life, but I still felt something was missing.  It took a long time, but eventually, I realized that what was missing was full acceptance of myself without all the blame, shame and judgement.  Yoga has taught me to be fully open and accepting of whatever goes on in the space that makes up who I am.  Through yoga I learned that the mind and the ego are not necessarily good or bad, they just are.  They are sort of like a talking bobble head at the back of your skull, flooding your mind with all sorts of thoughts and feelings.  With yoga, I can just breathe and flow and get space from my mind that both rejuvenates me and cultivates awareness.  Yoga is really about creating a place of acceptance, space, freedom and awareness for body, mind and spirit.  It allows me to be fully alive.  I believe that whetever reason that compels one to try yoga is the right reason - whether it is to be more toned, have greater peace of mind, or be more flexible.  The most important part of the practice is to just show up, breathe and be open and accepting of whatever shows up for you.
