Note from VEERA's Founder |
Valentine's Day. . .It came and went. Does true love come and go as well? From what I've understood, true love is complete acceptance of another as they are with no expectation of any kind of change. If this is so, how is it that love, true love fades?
Lately, I've been inquiring about myself. I've noticed that I'm constantly striving to be 'better'. Sometimes that 'better' takes the form of someone else and sometimes even somewhere else. Will becoming someone else in another place really make me that much better? In all of this striving, I've realized that I'm missing out on who I am right now. So, if I haven't accepted myself exactly as I am, how can I believe that I've accepted those who I supposedly 'love' for who they are? True love? I know I'm not there yet.
I hear the phrase that the journey is more exciting than the destination, but it hasn't really landed yet. Growth is wonderful, but how do I grow if I don't know or experience where I am right now? My internal navigation system has no idea which direction to go. I just keep trying, striving to be like her or him just because they look good. This desire to look good . . . Uuuggghhh! Why do I feel that I look so bad? It's a constant practice. Yoga is a constant practice. Lately, my intention on the mat has been to accept where I am right now. That can change from day to day, from the beginning of my practice to the end of my practice, from moment to moment. Some days it seems like a breeze to float up into a headstand and on others down dog feels like a challenge. When I'm able to come to the mat and let go of expectations, my practice is transformed. I feel so much more complete, peaceful, and content. I'm willing to take care of myself and also try things that might normally be quite intimidating.
In celebration of this month of love, I've set an intention to accept and love myself as I am so that I may be able to love others.

Meet Sevak Lyle!

I took my first yoga class at a Crunch gym in San Francsico almost 10 years ago. I considered myself to be in great shape, so as I felt myself first quivering and then flat-out shaking in Warrior 2. I was determined that this was a new physical challenge that I needed to CONQUER! Once I started getting on my mat regularly, I began to feel a more balanced strength and flexibility, and started to notice that I was less anxious and reactionary. I was learning how to breathe through a perceived crisis rather than getting myself worked up. Over time I came to connect to yoga as a whole life practice, a moving meditation rather than simply a physical challenge.
The practice of yoga has changed my life more than any other single thing. At times it's been challenging as it's often so much easier to just stay where I'm comfortable, playing small, flying under the radar, trying to blend in or say nothing rather than risk saying the wrong thing, creating separation between myself and others rather than seeking connection or common ground, and letting fear and anxiety guide my choices rather than truth and love. I know that my yoga practice asks more of me than this. It asks me to sometimes stay and breathe through discomfort. It asks me to back off and take child's pose even though my ego may be telling me that I need to stay in the pose and that I'd better make it look good! It asks me to take care of myself so that I have more to offer those in my community without condition or agenda. It asks me to continue to explore and question myself and the world around me. It asks me to consider that I am already perfect and divine just as I am, which is often the hardest part.
The journey that I embarked upon with the practice and teaching of yoga, is not one that will ever be conquered. There will always be a new pose and a lifetime's worth of highs and lows. There will be obstacles, however I am grateful for the opportunity to keep returning to my mat, my teachers, my community, and seeing where the road takes me. |
