Note from VEERA's Founder |
A new year, new decade, new possibilities! At the start of the new year, some set resolutions and some don't. Resolutions are a resolve to do something- to make a change. The problem comes when we hold ourselves so strong to these resolutions that we forget the purpose and begin to judge ourselves and maybe even others. By setting a resolution, we are out to change the way we currently do things; as long as we embark on this change and take a step towards it, isn't that progress? Part of creating and establishing a new way is allowing the old, no longer useful ways to fade. This can sometimes be the hardest part of it all as we hold on so tight to what we know right now. There's comfort in that.
For me, 2011 brings a new adventure, a new life and a new perspective. I've said to myself for years, that once I own my studio, I'll be able to simplify my life, become more present, etc, etc. As if owning a yoga studio somehow magically bestows all yogic traits upon the owner. Well, here we are and guess what . . . I still have to do the work! So for this new year, I'm setting an intention for growth, and I'm resolving to get used to being outside of my comfort zone both on and off my mat. Will this allow me to simplify my life and become more present? Who knows, but I guess being comfortable with the unknown is a large part of the course.
Namaste.

Karuna means compassion in sanskrit. This area of our newsletter is dedicated to compassionate acts within our community.
For the Holidays this year, the VEERA community raised $370 in support of two causes in our community! Half of this money has gone to One Photo Find, an organization helps bring missing children back home to their families by posting pictures in and around the community. They are completely volunteer based and last year alone they brought home 230 children! The other half went to a local family here in our community in need of financial help. Compassion from our Teachers:
Christine Aspen will be taking part in the Africa Yoga Project's Mentor Program in which she will mentor an Africa Yoga Project Teacher from Kenya from January 2011 through December 2011. The project consists of pairing each of the 40 Africa Yoga Project Teachers with a teacher mentor from the global Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga community. The purpose of the Mentorship Program is to provide each Africa Yoga Project Teacher with the opportunity to learn, contribute, become self sufficient, and inspire others to do the same. Christine will be mentoring Bryant Mungai from Kenya. The program kicks off this month. We look forward to hearing more on this as the program progresses.

About the Africa Yoga Project Teachers: All Africa Yoga Project Teachers were trained in yoga by Baron Baptiste and the Africa Yoga Project (AYP) in April 2009 and now receive coaching, support and wages in exchange for delivering free, community-based classes every week. The teachers come from the slum areas in which they teach and are able to powerfully connect with the people in their communities, inspiring positive social change on individual and collective levels. The teachers are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to their communities while earning a living wage to support themselves and their families while also continuing their education.

Meet Sevak Lisa!
Since I have made yoga a part of my daily life, I look everyday at myself and see what I can let go of. I practice releasing judgment, being less reactive, and try to connect with the most positive possible connection in my experiences. I understand that this may be something I practice for the rest of my life! I come back to my mat daily to remind myself to let go of ego, I am a part of ONE LOVE, connected to everything existing. I teach yoga to nurture my own soul to then share my brightest spark with everyone, hoping I can inspire with all that yoga has brought to my life and being there for others to share with me.
I have dabbled in yoga since 1987 but my true connection came in 2006, when I realized that whenever I left class I wanted to be a better person. Each time I left, I would see if I could have that feeling last longer than it previously had. ~Lisa Tseu | |
