ARTSNEWS

your monthly update from L/A Arts

Greetings!

I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Odelle Bowman and two weeks ago I became the Executive Director of L/A Arts. Having worked with the organization in various capacities over the past fifteen plus years, I believe I have a deep understanding of L/A Arts' mission and historical goals. I also have many ideas on how to move forward, both by partnering with other organizations and heading up projects and programs that will strengthen and enhance this community through the arts.

As a resident of Lewiston, having lived here for the past six years, I am truly invested in this community. I believe we have come a long way since L/A Arts' inception in 1973, but there is much more to be done; we have great potential. As I guide L/A Arts overall programming I will strive to ensure that all sectors of our community have the chance to enrich their lives through the power of the arts.

On Thursday, May 5, I invite you to stop by L/A Arts office, 221 Lisbon Street, from 9 am - 5 pm. I'd love to take this time to say hello and get to know the people who support this organization.

- Odelle

April 29 - June 10: Downtown Girls: A Reflection of Community
Downtown Girls: A Reflection of Community
For the past couple of months University of New England Master's Degree student, Donna Flynn, has been working with a group of 5-6 girls who are regular participants in an after-school tutoring program for refugee children at the Trinity Jubilee Center in downtown Lewiston.

She is teaching them how to capture images with a camera that help convey what their lives are like in Lewiston. The girls, who dubbed themselves "The Downtown Girls," chose 10 pictures each from their photo sessions, which will be on display at L/A Arts Community Gallery, 221 Lisbon Street, Lewiston at the end of April through June 10, 2011. The opening reception of "Downtown Girls: A Reflection of Community" takes place Friday, April 29 from 4 to 7 pm. The public is invited.

Looking for Feedback

Lewiston Auburn Film Festival
LAAF 2011

L/A Arts was thrilled to be a partner in this Twin City first and we want to thank all the helping hands that made it happen. To make it even better next year we are looking for feedback.

If you attended the festival, please let us know what you thought along with any suggestions for the future. If you didn't attend, let us know why not. What can be done to entice you to participate next year?

Your 5 minute reflection is much appreciated.

Artist Residencies
Figures of Speech

Figures of Speech Theatre Company

The Arts in Education Program is a core component of L/A Arts' work. Every school year we engage talented artist-educators for in-school residencies, reaching each of the public elementary and middle schools of Auburn and Lewiston.  Through residency work in the classrooms, assemblies, and arts presentations, our program reaches approximately 5,000 students and 350 teachers. The programs are designed by L/A Arts and school staff, based on curricular content and need at each school.

All of the L/A Arts  residencies introduce vital visual or performance arts education to our children, giving them a wonderful sense of the arts in life. Several more rigorous workshops this year raised the bar, cultivating artistic excellence  and challenging students to reach new heights through concentrated work with the artists.

Individual schools are also striving to provide more arts in education opportunities in general for their students. L/A Arts then administers those programs in partnership with the schools.   For example, this year a number of school programs added to the standard L/A Arts residences as they provided increased funding for more expanded residencies. In most cases, the additional funds were provided by school parent associations.  L/A Arts was also asked to administer an extensive program this year for Montello Elementary School, recipient of the Bob's Discount Furniture "Celebrate the Arts Award," providing multiple residencies throughout the school.
